New Co-operation between ABU and Japan MIC

delegation from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication of Japan


(MIC) visited the ABU secretariat last February. Discussions were focused on the introduction of the next generation broadcast such as Smart TV (broadcasting and broadband converged service) and 4K, which fully utilize the digital terrestrial TV (DTTV) infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region.


Mr. Yasushi Furukawa, Deputy Director of Promotion for Content Distribution, MIC, made a brief expose on the digitalisation status in Japan. In the presence of the ABU Secretary-General, Dr Javad Mottaghi, the ABU Technology


Director, Dr Amal Punchihewa and the Programming Director, Mr Tatsuhiro Beniko the Japanese delegation was briefed about the current development pertaining to Digital Migration in ABU member countries.


According to Dr Amal, very few ABU members in the region have completed Analogue Switch Off (ASO). Most members are yet to make clear plans in digitalisation. The ABU Technology Director added that Broadcasters are considering the adoption of Integrated Broadband-Broadcast (IBB) technologies and they are offering a mix of radio, television and multimedia in line with new technological development. he ABU Secretary-General, Dr Javad Mottaghi attended the first Strategic Plan Group


(SPG) meeting of the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) in Tunis earlier this year. Former ASBU DG is the Chairman of the ASBU SPG. Three


former ASBU Presidents from Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Algeria are also other members of the SPG.


Following a meeting between Dr Mottaghi and the ASBU Director- General, it has been agreed that both


Oceania region, only one broadcaster has introduced IBB service in addition to Hybridcast in Japan and OHTV in Korea.


Both the ABU and the MIC, Japan have agreed to strengthen their collaboration towards the realisation of next generation Broadcasting in the Asia-Pacific region.


Mr Furukawa said, “As part of regional and international cooperation, MIC Japan would like to share its knowledge and expertise on the next generation broadcast with Asia- Pacific countries implementing digital terrestrial TV and seek for possible collaboration to grow together.”


Unions will try to initiate one joint annual technical event, one joint annual news event and one joint annual sports training activity and they will share the costs.


ASBU will also participate in the ABU Radio Song Festival in Myanmar in May and in the TV Song Festival in Istanbul in October 2015. Finally, ASBU will attend the ABU Programme Committee, the Technical Committee and the General Assembly in Istanbul.
