Social Media and Broadcasting – New Opportunities: BES Conference Theme in New Delhi

he ABU participated actively in the BES EXPO 21st International Conference & Exhibition on Terrestrial and Satellite Broadcasting organised by the Broadcast
Engineering Society of India, in New Delhi, last January. This international event was endorsed by International Association of Broadcast Manufacturers (IABM) and Digital Radio Mondiale(DRM) and got the support of Prasar Bharati, ABU, the American Society of Broadcast Engineers, the Indian Ministry of Communications and IT and IETE. More than 800 broadcast professionals, media representatives and visitors attended the conference-cum-exposition which is the largest broadcast engineering event in this part of the sub- continent.
The expo was inaugurated by Mr Arun Jaitley, Minister of Finance, Corporate Affairs and Information & Broadcasting in the presence of Mr Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting, Mr Bimal Julka, Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and Dr A. Surya Prakash, Chairman, Prasar Bharati.
In his opening address, the Indian Finance Minister underlined the role of social media and new technologies in today’s competing broadcasting world. He added that social media is becoming an alternate form of broadcasting with millions of viewers across the world.
Forty-four speakers were on the agenda of the BES 24 ABU News
Conference which had eight sessions and one tutorial session. Twenty-four speakers were from overseas. Apart from the main theme, discussions were also held on other topics such as: Resurgence of Terrestrial, Audio Visual Repository – An imperative asset for Broadcasters; Challenging Content for Broadcast Revenue in New Platforms; Ultra- Breaking The Ice, Make in India –Opportunities for Manufacturers and Broadcasting as an Effective Social Power. The ABU Technology Director, Dr Amal Punchihewa made a presentation on Social Media and Broadcasting and chaired the session on Over the Air to Over the Top.
Over 4000 people visited the exhibition. They were mainly broadcast professionals, engineers, media personnel , engineering and media students. About 300 companies from 20 countries displayed their latest broadcast products and technologies. According to the promoters, this exhibition will definitely create awareness for business opportunities since the media industry in India is a multi-million dollar market.
Mr I. I. George, Chairman of the Conference Committee who is also Vice President of the Indian Broadcast Engineering Society and Additional Director General of Training at Prasar Bharati expressed his satisfaction with respect to the outcomes of both the conference and the exhibition.
The next BES Conference and EXPO will be held in February 2016 in New Delhi.
