Safely and Smartly..

Safely is the way ABU wishes to work and partner with members in a world threatened consistently by the effects of Climate Change. Disaster Risk Reduction has been a pivotal theme in many ABU activities since last December and this will be maintained throughout this year.

The Global News Forum held in Sendai, Japan in March 2015 has brought added value through supporting members in improving the management of disaster risks through media. ABU is thankful to NHK-Japan which champions this endeavour as well as for its precious assistance to member colleagues. The Union was very active during the 3rd United Nations Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai and was instrumental for issuing a Common Declaration by ABU-EBU-ASBU-AUB. The overall objective is to save human lives and all are unanimous that broadcast media has an important role to play.

Smartly enabling change characterised, however, the 11th ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium (DBS) in March 2015 in Kuala Lumpur. About one thousand delegates coming from different parts of the world but mainly from ABU member countries expressed their views on the challenges which represent the unprecedented transformation of the broadcast technology.

The Asia- Pacific region is at the forefront of this technological transformation and has a duty to share its expertise and experience in our digitally-connected world. As usual ABU is the driving force in conveying that transformation in the region and to its members.

Through this first edition of ABU News this year, we shall meet the new Director of TRT-Turkey, Senol Göka who wants to propel further his station on the international scene and who is getting ready to host the ABU General Assembly in Istanbul next October. Other activities include the fostering of unity and friendship among Asian countries through initiatives like 1Asia, successfully managed by ABU Programming Department. We will also make acquaintance with a new ABU Member – Korea Business TV (WOW TV), the ‘Bloomberg’ channel of Seoul which really means business!

In the past three months, ABU has been strengthening its relations with its European and Arab members. This has paved the way for a new partnership with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU). Our Union has also been assisting members like Bangladesh TV in the Digitalisation process.

Safely and Smartly, ABU will maintain its on-going activities and initiate new projects in the interest of members both old and new.

Welcome to all to this edition of ABU News. Enjoy your reading. 4 ABU News
