ILSA Chapter Happenings

news articles relating to international law, foreign policy, and current events. Additionally, we try to bring attention to events taking place at KU or in the local area that relate to topics involving international law, such as KU Law Review’s sym- posium on statelessness, which involved several issues related to immigration law. This increase of social media has expanded our network and highlights ILS functions, especially among non- ILS members.

Through increased social media presence and active leadership our chapter saw a 40% growth in membership this year. We accredit this to a “top-heavy” approach, wherein we scheduled most of our fall semester events at the beginning of the year. At this time the 1L class is learning about the different student groups, and students overall are less busy than any other time in the year. We invited Cathleen Carothers to speak on careers in foreign policy and sponsored a T.G.I.T. (Thank God It’s Thursday) through the Student Bar Association where students can go out and have some fun! We also held our annual Kick-Off Picnic, which we co-sponsor with another stu- dent group, which garnered a lot of interest from the 1L class.

The ILS officers developed a new program this

year called “Coffee Talk,” playing off the title of an old Saturday Night Live sketch. Twice a month ILS members meet at local coffee shops to dis- cuss international current events as they relate to foreign policy. Officers host Coffee Talk on a rotation where they pick the topic for that night’s discussion. Some topics we’ve discussed this semester include international implications in in- ternet law, Hong Kong protests in China, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This has had great suc- cess as a new program, and we hope to increase participation in the next semester.

Finally, our major event for this year will be the human rights symposium, except we are re- making this event anew. We have formatted the event in favor of the famous Oxford Union de- bates. The Bleeding Kansas Debates will feature six law student speakers representing the affir- mative and opposing sides, debating a topic that will be chosen by the student body. At the end of the debate, the audience will decide the winning side, and a coffee talk reception will follow. We hope that this will be a more engaging experi- ence for the students and faculty, rather than a lecture or panel discussion. And in an effort to keep the social momentum burgeoning, we will be live tweeting the event so stay tuned!
