ILSA Chapter Happenings

ILS looks forward to hosting a panel of legal pro- fessionals that will speak on International Hu- man Rights next semester. ILS will also host a Chinese professor of law, Professor Rose Zhang, to come speak on China’s role in contemporary WTO issues, as well as a Tibetan Parliamentarian in exile. Mr. Venerable Gesse Phelgye will come speak on the relevance of Buddhist Philosophy in today’s conflicted world.

This spring, ILS and the Gonzaga Journal of In- ternational Law (GJIL) will host a two-day sym- posium open to local practitioners and students that will focus on the Hague Convention and its impact on adoption and domestic violence. We are also collaborating with GJIL to develop an in- teractive blog that will encourage students and others to write about their international inter- ests. Lastly, we will be joining with GJIL to host the “Human Race”, a running fundraiser that will benefit “Partners in Health”, an organization that provides health care to the poor. Additionally we plan to host a joint River Cleanup project and a Refugee and Immigration education program in collaboration with other clubs within the school.

ILS is supported and advised by Dr. Upendra Acharya, who also coaches our Jessup Cup Moot Court Team. We look forward to an excit- ing year!

The Hague Univ. of Applied Sciences The Hague, NETHERLANDS

Liya Belenska, President & Jovana Perovska, Vice President

Being a program that focuses on international law almost in its entirety, the ILSA Chapter at The Hague University of Applied Sciences has been somewhat a natural extension of the study program.

Our Chapter marked the end of the last academ- ic year with an intriguing discussion evening with

Ms. Claire Duffy, Program Manager of the IBA ICC Program in The Hague, who spoke on the topic of “The Politics of International Justice.” The event was a great success in our Interna- tional & European Law Program and we received positive feedback from our colleagues, who par- ticipated in the discussion.

The start of the academic year 2014/2015 has been marked with the introduction of the new management board, composed of 5 enthusias- tic, energetic and committed students coming from five different countries, upholding the inter- national character of both our program and ILSA.

This year the ILSA Chapter was introduced to our students through an introductory presentation, elaborating on what ILSA is, how the students could benefit from their membership in it, as well as how they could contribute to the activities of the Chapter.

The recruitment campaign, following the intro- ductory presentation, has been met with great interest by our fellow students. We hope to build, grow and prosper on this interest throughout the whole year. Once we have reconciled a strong membership base, individual groups are to be set up which will organize various activities, rang- ing from guest lectures on various topics, inter- national law related workshops, legal profession- alism seminars and others.

An addition to the above-mentioned activities, study sessions were organized in anticipation of the first exams of the academic year, which have provided the freshmen of the program with a base for successful exam preparation, coping with the tension before their first academic ex- ams and surviving the stress during the exam week itself.

We are currently anticipating ILSA’s first guest lecture for this year that will touch upon a very prominent and developing area of international law yet to be fully explored: (aero)space law.
