In Review of International Law Weekend 2014

by Paige Coriden 2014-2015 ILSA Student Vice President I 26

nternational Law Weekend, an annual con- ference organized by the American Branch of the International Law Association (ABI- LA) and the International Law Students As-

sociation (ILSA), was a huge success this year. Over 1,100 practitioners, law professors, mem- bers of governmental and non-governmental organizations, and students from all over the world registered to attend three days of com- pelling panels discussing the most timely inter- national law topics.

The event kicked off Thursday, October 23 at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York with a distinguished opening panel. This panel provided an engaging introduction to the conference’s theme, International Law in a Time of Chaos, with a timely discussion of the current upheaval in the Middle East. Panelists discussed the unprecedented violence by ISIS, Russia’s experimentation with ‘soft’ invasions, and China’s involvement in maritime expeditions far from its coasts. The ideas presented during the panel provided attendees of the wine and cheese reception, hosted by the BitFury Group, Ltd., with many issues to talk about.

The weekend continued Friday, October 24 and Saturday, October 25 with 36 exciting panels at Fordham Law School’s beautiful new building. Topics ranged from international investment ar- bitration to Islamic law and included a diverse array of panels on both private and public inter- national law. The weekend offered something for everyone and many participants were forced to choose between several fascinating panels occurring at the same time.

On Friday, October 24, attendees were so excit- ed to continue the weekend, that some showed up two hours prior to the first morning panels. This gave them the opportunity to network with other members of the international law commu- nity and reconnect with old friends

The first session of panels presented confer- ence participants with the option of attending five interesting panels on diverse topics. In U.S. Surveillance and Humans Rights, Peter Margu- lies from Roger Williams University School of Law moderated while two New York University School of Law Professors and a Microsoft Re- search Fellow from New York University’s Infor- mation Law Institute addressed the extraterri- torial application of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. During the panel, the lively discussion on NSA surveillance abroad sparked many different opinions and significant controversy.

At the same time, a panel on corporate com- pliance investigations provided attendees with their first of seven opportunities to earn Con- tinuing Legal Education (CLE) Credits at the conference.

During this session of panels, conference partic- ipants also had the opportunity to attend panels on legal challenges in the European Union, the latest scholarship on international adjudication, and the role of international law in climate geo- engineering.

The morning continued with an update on the International Criminal court and the process of amending the Rome Statute to include crimes
