ILSA Chapter Happenings HNLU ILS
Hidayatullah Nat’l Law Univ. Raipur, INDIA
Mahip Singh Sikarwar, Chief Officer
This fall the Hidayatullah National Law Univer- sity’s International Law Society will be launching its International Essay Competition which will be just a warm-up for its flagship event in coming spring, an International Conference on Interna- tional Humanitarian Law, which will be organized in association with ILSA and will ensure participa- tion from India and abroad. The Conference will bring together hundreds of law students from around the world to learn and network with hon- ored members of the international legal frater- nity. Students will have the opportunity to speak one-to-one with panelists and experts, exchang- ing ideas in the heart of the spectacular scene of Raipur.
The last conference on refugee rights held by HNLU ILSA Chapter was a huge success under the successful leadership of then Chief Officer, Ms. Guneet Ahuja. It attracted one of the most elite panels from the External Affairs Ministry of India and paper presenters from all the premier institutions of India.
Furthermore, this year, the International Law So- ciety of HNLU officially came into existence with a fully functioning team of dedicated members registered under the ILSA-Chapter. For the first time the ILSA –Chapter has been taken further on to transform into our university’s International Law Society. A team of 10 founding members is drafting its constitution and working on some re- ally creative ideas to promote international law. Soon enough we will be launching our monthly newsletter which will be reporting on prevalent international issues and recent developments in international law to equip our students with the
requisite update on international law. The news- letter and all upcoming events will be notified on our blog also. Talks are in progress with various International Law Society’s in India and abroad for collaboration on a knowledge sharing basis. The Indian Society of International Law has also shown a positive response for assisting us in our endeavor to promote international law.
Our year long association with ILSA is evident from the increasing interest in international law of our students as seen from the successful par- ticipation in most of the International Law Moot Court Competitions including the world rounds of Jessup’s, and various International Legal In- ternships. Furthermore, other events planned by the International Law Society of HNLU are Inter- national Law Quiz, Symposiums, and group dis- cussions on the most daunting international con- cerns. Also this year, the ILS is planning to come up with an innovative concept of organizing a ‘No-paper’ Moot Court Competition on interna- tional law, based purely on speakers’ knowledge of international law and their confidence to con- vince the jury without authorities, solely on logic derived from basic tenets of international law.
A series of guest lecturers have already been chalked out for the next semester from our dis- tinguished alumni studying in and post graduated from University like Harvard and Berkeley. Such enriched discussion with the experts of interna- tional law would enhance the ever-growing inter- est in international law among the students of our university and others.
