Diversifying the Group Ex Portfolio

Classes generate energy and excitement by providing new experiences

The ever-evolving category of group exercise programming is at it again: it’s now blending classic staples with new and varied programs that are drawing members in droves, boosting motivation and adherence, and delivering an

enthralling experience for everyone. “There’s a trend away from ‘exercise as hard work’ in favor of

options that are effective, but easy and fun,” contends Phillip Mills, the founder and chief executive of Les Mills International. Packing group fitness studios week after week are body-shaking

classes like Zumba, hip-hop, and Les Mills’ brand-new dance-inspired workout, SH’BAM. “The growing trend for group exercise is the merging of fitness,

entertainment, and social interaction,” says Kike Santander, the founder and CEO of Batuka, LLC, a unique group exercise programming company that combines dance, mixed martial arts, Pilates, and yoga. Batuka is debuting in the U.S. next month at IHRSA’s 30th International Convention and Trade Show. “The opportunity to laugh, sweat, and accomplish great things is necessary to bring members back again.” Those opportunities are also being realized in new class formats,

such as suspension training, rowing, vibration workouts, and Bodyblade routines. As formats diversify, group-ex programming companies are fulfilling the needs of health clubs and instructors. “Clubs are asking for programs that are cost-effective and easy to

implement, so those supported by quality instructor training and resources, such as manuals, DVDs, and continuing education, are in demand,” explains Robin Degtjarewsky, the vice president of programs and education for Mad Dogg Athletics, Inc., the creator of Spinning. Barbara Klein, CEO of FLEXI-SPORTS in Munich, Germany, agrees.

“Many clubs are asking for teaching aids for their trainers and are open to suggestions and input for class ideas—which is why we produce a new DVD every three months that shows how to use our tools, includ- ing the FLEXI-Bar and XCO-Trainer.” Despite the influx of new classes, traditional formats, such as group

cycling, boot camp, resistance training, and step, still inspire aficionados and are by no means disappearing. “Those classes will not become extinct but, with all the variety today,

they may not enjoy the schedule dominance they once had,” notes Fraser Quelch, the director of training and development at Fitness Anywhere, Inc. The clear consensus is that innovation is ubiquitous, with plenty of

variety to spark members’ interest. See for yourself on the following pages of F.I.T. Extra! —|
