Augie’s Quest Poised for Success


Recently, John McCarthy, the director emeritus of IHRSA, and I enjoyed a round of golf. When we’re together, the topic of conversation inevita- bly turns to Augie Nieto and his amazing quest to find a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.


As we made our way around the course, John and I came to the conclusion that the truly great figures in any field have an extra gear that they can kick into when circumstances require. Augie, the cofounder and former head of Life Fitness, engaged his as he came to grips with his own ALS diagnosis. Among the results: Augie’s Quest, a unique, business-


oriented initiative that, thus far, has raised more than $26 million for ALS research; improved quality of life for some ALS victims; and empowered Augie’s own heroic, and ongoing, battle with the debilitating disease. Working with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)


and the Therapy Development Institute, Augie and his team have redefined the way that ALS research is conducted. Driven by his example and remarkable corporate skills, they’ve developed


a cure-driven approach that’s helped coordinate ALS research and testing worldwide. Their business model is nimble and extremely efficient, and has produced


some impressive results. To date, they’ve: • Isolated over 30 genes related to ALS • Screened drugs already in use that may work in the treatment of ALS


• Invested in equipment and techniques that have reduced the time and cost required to collect, prepare, and test samples from 90 days, at a cost of $1,000/ sample, to one day, at a cost of $250/sample


• Developed a drug that significantly slows paralysis in animal models and provides a therapeutic delivery system


• And entered into negotiations with a large biopharmaceutical company to test this drug in human clinical trials.


Augie’s team, it seems to me, is on the verge of a breakthrough! The fitness industry has been a strong supporter of Augie’s Quest from


the very beginning. Next month, the 6th Annual BASH for Augie’s Quest will take place on Friday, March 18, during IHRSA’s 30th Anniversary International Convention and Trade Show in San Francisco. If you haven’t already done so, please plan on attending and make a generous donation. Like Augie, the members of IHRSA also have an extra gear.
