group’s annual meeting, is offered through a partnership with MentorNet, a Web-based nonprofit. “This service unites newly minted professionals, the future of our field, with their more established peers,” explains Henke. “It’s an easy-to-use platform that requires a minimal invest- ment, in terms of time, from participants.” ACSM also makes use of social media, including
Facebook, Twitter, and blogging, “but expect more,” says Henkel. “We’ll be using them more extensively and strategically.”
The American Council on Exercise (ACE), also based in San Diego, recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, and now represents more than 50,000 certified fitness professionals worldwide. The council has been particu- larly busy recently, and has even more initiatives on the drawing boards. “We recently teamed up with NuVal LLC, a Braintree, Massachusetts-based creator of a proprie- tary, consumer-targeted, nutritional ranking system. We’ve also expanded our Find an ACE Trainer program for AARP, which has grown our client base considerably,” explains Scott Goudeseune, ACE’s president and CEO. “To make CECs more accessible and affordable, we’ve created cost-saving bundles, packaged in key topic areas. And we’ve teamed with IDEA to create a co-branded version of the IDEA Fitness Journal, which, in each issue, will offer an opportunity to earn 0.1-0.5 CECs.” ACE’s Get Fit Website, Goudeseune notes, is “a one-stop
shop that includes workouts, recipes, calculators, and more.” And its OperationFitKids curriculum, designed for youngsters in grades 3-8, “teaches students about the importance of an active lifestyle and the dangers of being overweight.”
Looking forward, Goudeseune observes, “We’re commit-
ted to eliminating obesity… In the coming months, we’ll unveil new programs and reveal more specifics regarding ACE’s new obesity-targeted campaign.”
Other education and certification providers are proving equally sensitive, responsive, and inventive when it comes to meeting their clients’ needs. The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, has expanded its reach and impact with a number of valuable offerings. Among them are its “Interview with a Member” podcasts, a series of instruc- tive audio interviews with NSCA members; inexpensive online versions of all its conference sessions; Performance Analysis Video, a Web-based program that describes, in video and text, how exercises should be performed; and, through a third party, credit-card processing services. The National Federation of Professional Trainers
(NFPT), based in Lafayette, Indiana, now offers, among other things: free study materials, available online, prior to enroll- ment in a course; interest-free financing; online self-tests that can be completed at no additional cost; and a complimentary six-month membership in IDEA. The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), of Calabasas, California, has added to the list of possibilities by partnering with the Health and Fitness Provider Network (
HFPN.com) and, in turn, with
Sharecare.com. The HFPN affiliation provides NASM-certi- fied trainers with access to an extensive roster of online resources, and HFPN and NASM have become the exclusive health and fitness coaching providers for
Sharecare.com and its millions of users. Like ACE, all of these organizations and others, Goude-
seune observes, “are continuing to develop and contribute value to stay at the forefront of scientific discovery and trends, and to continue leading the fitness industry at large.” The message is clear: Stay tuned. There’s much more
