SCW Fitness Education, based in Northbrook, Illinois, is one of the largest fitness instructor training companies, awarding a number of specialty certificates, and, like IDEA, is acutely aware of the need to keep its offerings both cur- rent and comprehensive. “We’re in an ever-changing industry,” observes Sarah Kooperman, the firm’s founder and CEO. “We feel compelled to stay on the cutting edge, and constantly strive to be proactive and innovative.” SCW conducts conventions, grants certificates, and

sells instructional DVDs/videos, music, apparel, books, and equipment, some of which are marketed directly to consumers. One of its most unique services, however, is provided by a professional, fully equipped studio located in its Northbrook, Illinois, headquarters, which can be used to film ads, DVDs, etc.
The studio opened last summer, and, according to
Kooperman, has proven quite popular. “We’ve had so many inquiries,” she reports. “We completed six shoots within the first few months.”
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), based in Indianapolis, Indiana, is the largest exercise and sports- medicine science organization of its kind. Because it has more than 20,000 members worldwide, communicating with them effectively and efficiently is a primary concern. It does so in a number of traditional ways: conferences and symposiums; teleconferences; the quarterly con- sumer-focused Fit Society Page Newsletter; and several publications, including ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal. It also achieves its goal in two unique ways—with a radio program and Internet-based mentoring. “We seek projects that, ultimately, are in the best inter- est of our membership and the public,” says Dan Henkel,
“We’re in an ever-changing industry. We feel compelled to stay on the cutting edge, and constantly strive to be proactive and innovative.”
Available 24/7, the facility includes everything from
teleprompters, to a production crew, to an underwater camera. Shoots run upwards of eight hours, and rates start at approximately $3,000 for a single DVD. Kooper- man, who’s trained as a lawyer, can also offer advice on legal issues, and provide guidance on distribution and other related matters.
CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL
Five years ago, in January 2006, IHRSA began recommending that clubs hire personal trainers who possessed at least one current certification from a certifying agency that had acquired, or was seeking, third-party accreditation of its certification procedures and protocols from an independent, experienced, and nationally recognized accrediting body. The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), the accrediting body of the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA), was recognized as one such group. The following industry organizations are currently NCCA-accredited:

ACSM’s senior director of communication and advocacy. “These two initiatives coincide with our mission—they were no-brainers.” The weekly, hour-long radio program, hosted by
exercise physiologist Melanie Cole, is transmitted via
