Feature Differences, U-values and Part L

In today’s market we have all been told and know about the main benefits of folding sliding doors creating a spectacular design feature within architectural projects. This type of door certainly brings the outside in by opening up rooms to the outside world. The advantages of installing folding sliding doors has also filtered down to the retail markets so the vast majority of renovation or new-build projects will more than likely include them. The choice of products and companies offering folding sliding doors has also grown, to such an extent that the budding DIY enthusiast can now pick them up on the high street.

As with any product, with choice comes a vast array of qualities

and differences. The DIY option will obviously be very different from a bespoke solution that will be tailored for the specific needs and designs of a project. However, at the top of the market among the bespoke companies there are still differences that can be found. Differences like track options that will offer flush transitions between internal and external floor levels, through to high weather protection for coastal environments and sea facing projects. Importantly there are also some aluminium systems that do not include thermally broken tracks, heads and jambs. Many systems have sightlines over 50% wider than others, reducing the amount of glazed openings, which in turn lowers the amount of light. Then there are the varying emphases between systems that are put onto security and safety, particularly finger safety between panels when closing doors, something that is really apparent with many timber systems. With top end systems you can combine these beneficial features, within the design such as corner openings and faceted doors, creating curved walls of opening doors.

It is important to consider the requirements of the project and the

intentions of clients when choosing and specifying products for projects. Clients that are after specific features for their folding sliding doors will always benefit from exploring the additional features available, ensuring the product matches up to their expectations. Something that Paul Bancroft architects agreed with when choosing doors for Gibney House, a private residential project in East Anglia.

Three sets of four-panel composite (timber clad with aluminum)

folding sliding doors were installed to span the rear aspect of the house, enabling the clients to take full advantage of the spectacular views from the first floor living area. Derick Uys, Associate from the practice explained, “We wanted to maximise the openings on the south elevation to take advantage of the magnificent view and to give a seamless transition between the interior and external terrace areas. Having used the company’s systems before, we knew they could be relied upon to provide a high quality product which would comfortably achieve the technical and aesthetic requirements of the design.”
