Prestigious IGS 2010 Award for Tensar development

Tensar International Corporation's innovative TriAxT geogrid, and the

technical developments it represents, has won one of civil engineering's most prestigious awards, from the International Geosynthetics Society.

Tim Oliver, Tensar International Vice President Marketing, explains: "The IGS Award is all the more significant because it is presented for achievement in the period since 2005, not just the best in one year. Entry is by invitation following nominations from the industry, so Tensar's TriAxT has obviously already made a genuine impression on an international stage.

"Judged against submissions from a very wide field of categories, from construction methods to products and testing equipment, TriAxT stands out as a significant advance." The TriAxT citation for the IGS 2010 Award, presented at the IGS 9th International Conference in Brazil in May, stated: 'This IGS award is given to Tensar for the development and implementation of a triangular geogrid intended to display properties not achievable with conventional square or rectangular geogrids. The triangular geogrid has the capacity to develop more isotropic stiffness and this is expected to provide potential benefits across many applications.'

Wolseley UK’s Sustainable Building Center (SBC) in Leamington Spa has scooped yet another award, this time from the town’s Leamington Society. The landmark building, which recently marked the arrival of its 10,000th visitor, was given the award ‘in recognition of the significant contribution made to the quality of Royal Leamington Spa’. During the ceremony, held at the town’s Dormer Conference Centre, the building was described as ‘inspirational’ in setting out the direction that construction must take in the coming years. Mark Elton of London-based ECD Architects was also recognised by

the society for the inspired contemporary design and sweeping curves of the building, which was constructed two years ago as an industry showcase for sustainable building materials and has won numerous national awards and attracted a number of prestigious visitors. Tim Pollard, Wolseley UK’s Head of Sustainability, said: “Recognition by the Leamington Society for our building is a significant achievement in that it is a community award assessed by local people who have a real interest in how the town develops and the contribution buildings like ours make to its future. I was particularly pleased that there was a real understanding of why the SBC was constructed and that sustainability is the future of construction.” The awards presented to the SBC were among 17 presented by the

Mayor of Leamington, Councillor Robert Cunliffe, on behalf of the Leamington Society, which holds a biennial ceremony to promote high standards of planning and architecture in the town.
