Schüco Façades Meet Passivhaus Standards
The PassivHaus Institute (PHI) in Darmstadt has certified that Schüco FW 50+.SI and FW 60+.SI façades with either an aluminium or a glass fibre-reinforced pressure plate, meet the criteria for inclusion in an officially recognised PassivHaus dwelling. Since Schueco is the only provider of aluminium facades that has been able to obtain this certification, which is based on the façades achieving unbeatable levels of thermal insulation and weather-tightness, the company is uniquely well positioned to assist architects and specifiers who are aiming for buildings that are completely energy efficient.

‘Condensafe ‘+’ - Protecting the Environment
The increasing problem of untreated low level acidic condensate from condensing boilers heading for the drainage infrastructure and soakaways has been addressed by Salamander, part of Sentinel Performance Solutions, with the release of its ‘Condensafe ‘+’ unit. This unique and innovative in-line unit, designed to be mounted between the boiler condensate outlet and the drain, contains a special medium that will effectively neutralise acidic waste from condensing boilers before allowing the now harmless waste to be discharged to the drains. The neutralising medium can be easily replaced every twelve months when the boiler undergoes its annual service.

Innovative Solar Water Heating Systems
Solar Twin Ltd is a UK company that manufactures and supplies innovative, patented, zero carbon, solar water heating systems. Grid tied PV systems are also available. Our pump and solar controller are powered by a small photovoltaic (solar electric) panel, which eliminates all parasitic mains electrical loads. In this system, the hot water is stratified in the cylinder, keeping the hottest water where needed, at the top. The panel is very quick to install, usually taking less than a day, due to its simplicity. Another significant advantage is that all the pipework is silicone based, meaning the panel is can freeze safely. Therefore, no glycol or drain-down is needed, maintenance is minimal and customer satisfaction is excellent. Our solar thermal panels are Solar Keymarked, and are hence approved products, and we are MCS approved installers. Solar Twin retails both DIY products, and fully installed systems.

www.buildingconstructiondesign.eu ‘Energy Saving’ Glass Block Technology
Working in conjunction with Seves, Shackerley, one of the country’s largest distributors of glass blocks, has announced the UK launch of ‘Energy Saving’ glass block manufacturing technology. A new patented technique, applied as an optional treatment to glass blocks in the Seves portfolio, results in a reduction in their thermal transmittance of almost 50%. The advance makes large glass block facades a more thermally efficient, eco-friendly architectural solution than ever before and opens up a new range of design opportunities for specifiers focused on long-term sustainability. Shackerley can now offer ‘Energy Saving’ glass blocks with a u-value of just 1.5 W/m2 K. The increase in thermal insulation is achieved by introducing a low-emissivity glass plate, invisible to the naked eye. This interrupts the thermal bridge between the two halves of the block and modifies its reflective properties and ability to transmit solar energy. To further reduce thermal transmission, pressure controlled argon gas is also injected into the block. In addition to standard tests required to obtain CE certification in accordance with norm UNI EN 1051-2, the ‘Energy Saving’ glass blocks have been subjected to laboratory tests in accordance with appropriate European Norms to test their U-values, G-values compressive strength, thermal endurance and acoustic insulation characteristics.

Sentinel’s Domestic Heating System Filter
Sentinel is seeing encouraging sales of its highly effective domestic heating system filter which removes magnetic and non-magnetic system debris effectively from a heating system. Importantly, and unlike other filters on the market, it features a proven design, it’s recommended by leading system component manufacturers and because it requires no energy to operate, it’s very environmentally friendly – both in operation, and in that by removing debris from the system, it allows the heating system to operate at optimum efficiency levels, helping to reduce energy usage and as a result, CO2 emissions.
