awkward site being a corner of the school that was originally occupied by a temporary building and our challenge was to create a 160 seater dining room, full commercial kitchen and three classrooms. The challenge was being able to incorporate all of these within the

design. Also the technical problems of excavating 70,000 cubic feet of earth, whilst supporting the adjacent Junior School building and protecting the lime tree. There have been constructional problems and a lot of setting out issues and even though it is a relatively simple plan, the angles created by the site boundaries set up all sorts of complications in terms of construction. The importance of maintaining good playground space for the school

was of particular importance for this latest project for Hornsby House. The school has a restricted site and we have always taken the opportunity to maximise and improve the playgrounds whenever possible, hence the decision to extend under the playground for this building. The new building is designed so the loss of external space has been minimal and in fact we have managed to create an improved level playground with its special soft rubber surface and markings as well as a little protected garden for smaller quiet gatherings. It’s been a longer road than we expected with the main contractor going into receivership at Christmas, but I am delighted that we have finally overcome the considerable challenges, statutory, contractual and physical, to deliver this exciting new building for the school.” The method of construction used for new school building was steel sheet piling, waterproof concrete basement walls and floors topped off with a steel frame superstructure. The roof has been covered with a laminated timber structure finished with stainless steel. The basement stretches out underneath the playground, beyond the

footprint of the ground-floor level. In this way, the building fills an awkward, under-utilised corner of the school site and has taken away very little playground space. It was planned around the protected lime tree, which now forms the

centrepiece of a small garden area and the roofline slopes up and away from the perimeter walls so that the building has low visual impact from

outside the school site. The new building, which opens in time for the second half of the summer term, contains three classrooms at ground level and a dining room with catering facilities in the basement below. The three new classrooms are all similar in size, however their unusual shapes gives them not only a feeling of space and light, but also each room takes on its own unique look and feel. The basement dining room is an outstanding success. It creates a

feeling of space and light, the latter being an extremely difficult feat to accomplish in an underground area. The new dining room will also act as an additional large multi-purpose space for presentations, activities and after-school clubs. Jon Gray Headmaster at Hornsby House School is extremely pleased

with the finished project, “We asked Dinwiddie MacLaren Architects to provide us with a dining room for 160 people, plus a full commercial kitchen, and three classrooms upstairs. We gave them a very small footprint to work with and really what James Dinwiddie has delivered is an absolutely stunning building. Nobody that comes in can believe the amount of space and light he has created downstairs, and with three fantastic classrooms upstairs, we are delighted. Leading this thriving school is a great pleasure. Why? Wonderful

children, supportive parents and an outstanding, dynamic group of staff who work together brilliantly to maintain the warm and purposeful atmosphere at Hornsby House. The sole aim of the school is to provide the best possible education for the children here and this exciting new building gives us great new facilities to achieve this aim. Hornsby House continues to go from strength to strength.”
