Architects’ Award-Winning Small Animal Hospital

John Swinney MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable

Growth, has officially opened the award-winning £10.5 million Small Animal Hospital for the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Glasgow designed by Archial Architects. Situated at the entrance to the grounds of the Garscube Estate, the Small Animal Hospital provides state of the art services for animal owners and referring practitioners throughout Scotland and Northern England, including the most advanced diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical techniques. Archial’s striking design for the £10.5 million pioneering Small Animal

Arup installs Gormley Statues Arup’s contribution to worldwide infrastructure comes in many guises –

from Far East airports and eco-cities to massive bridges across the globe. Indeed, the company’s latest project will augment Arup’s long and productive working relationship and technically-challenging collaborations with Antony Gormley, Britain’s best known contemporary sculptor, supplying the engineering know-how needed to turn his unique artistic vision into practical reality. Winding through a cityscape from Edinburgh’s Georgian splendour at

the Gallery of Modern Art via leafy suburbs to the contrasting starkness of dockland, Edinburgh’s Water of Leith has acquired a series of life-size male figures. Arup has just overseen the installation of the supports it has designed for these cast iron statues, four of which are actually located in the river.

Dubbed Six Times and sculpted for the National Galleries of Scotland

by Antony Gormley, the figures will more than complement Edinburgh’s fame as the repository of many celebrated statues and lustrous adornments in the classically beautiful city. Few can have missed Gormley’s innovative work in the UK. Best known must be his towering Turner Prize winning Angel of the North in Gateshead, an earlier collaboration with Arup, and his 100 figures on Merseyside’s Crosby Beach. Arup’s Project Manager Ian Downie explains that in addition to the scenic attractions of the figures, there is a practical aspect as well. “Each figure will act a gauge for the river depth as the water swells and

recedes in this celebrated waterway,” he reveals. “The work demanded a comprehensive pre-installation study of the ecology in the Water of Leith and, of course, the impact of the figures on water flow. For example, we mathematically modelled the river at each location, to establish approximate river velocities and water levels. In turn, we designed the statues to ‘topple over’ under particular flood loads, by creating a hinged base plate with shear pins that are designed to fail due to a degree of debris build up or a log impact,” he adds.

CJ Partnership designs new environmental lakeside home

Award winning Rochdale-based CJ Partnership Architects is providing conceptual design and consultancy services for an innovative and environmentally sensitive new home near Rochdale. The home, which is designed to use very little energy, will be constructed on the shores of Hollingworth Lake on the outskirts of Littleborough near Rochdale. CJ Partnership was asked by Mr and Mrs Miller to design the new contemporary home to have great low energy credentials and make the

most of the fantastic lakeside setting. A combination of solar orientation, ground-source heat pumps and

photo-voltaic panels, combined with excellent insulation standards and careful use of thermal mass, will substantially reduce the operational energy consumption of the dwelling. The design takes advantage of the sloping site by positioning the main entrance at mid-level.

Hospital has already won a string of awards, including the prestigious RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award, a RIBA Regional Award and the Supreme Award from the Glasgow Institute of Architects. The primary design principle for this facility was to create a large hospital building without ruining the beautiful green space for which the Garscube Estate is justly renowned. Essentially, the solution was to use the topography of the site and to insert the building within it. Archial Architects has confirmed that it is to donate £2,500 from the Andrew Doolan Prize fund to the Small Animal Hospital.
