On the six-month anniversary of the Haiti earthquake, the international charity ARCHIVE (Architecture for Health In Vulnerable Environments) has launched the campaign Kay e Sante nan Ayiti (Creole for Housing and Health in Haiti) to raise awareness of how innovative housing designs can reduce the transmission of airborne diseases such as tuberculosis (TB). The one-year campaign starts with a global design competition calling on architects, engineers, health specialists, and the general public to pool together their knowledge and submit housing designs which can mitigate TB transmission and are sensitive to the local culture. The Prince’s Foundation for the built environment has specified Sandtoft’s Cassius clay roof tile for its high profile ‘Natural House’ project. The environmentally- friendly home has been built on the BRE Innovation Park to demonstrate that a building can reduce carbon and energy inputs by 70% while retaining a high level of construction quality. Newport High School, constructed by the Leadbitter Group, was named Project of the Year by Constructing Excellence in Wales at its annual awards on Friday 2nd July. Leadbitter’s Mariners Quay was also presented with the Low/Zero Carbon Award. Judges hailed Newport High School, which was opened by the Princess Royal earlier this year, as a “High achiever.”


English Heritage Buildings is celebrating after winning a prestigious Sussex Heritage Trust Award in the Commercial category for its design and construction of a new shop at Pashley Manor in Ticehurst. The annual Sussex Heritage Trust Awards recognise conservation, restoration and new-build projects in Sussex. The awards reward good design, traditional skills and craftsmanship.

Hornsey Town Hall is set for a face-lift which could pave the way for a cultural renaissance in the heart of Crouch End. Haringey Council’s planning committee gave the green light to ambitious plans to restore the much-loved Grade II listed building and bring it back into community use. Parts of the building and surrounding land will be developed into housing to help cover renovation costs.

The humble construction site cabin is set for a makeover as part of an ambitious plan to cut the carbon footprint of sites by 15% within the next two years. The plan was developed by the Strategic Forum for Construction in partnership with the Carbon Trust and with the involvement of many of the leading names in the UK construction industry. It outlines a package of measures designed to cut the industry’s carbon emissions in England by some 750,000 tonnes a year, saving firms £180m a year in energy costs.
