www.us- tech.com ASM Insights at APEX Continued from previous page Juan Francisco talked at length

about the development of the indus- try in Mexico and how they find themselves currently winning busi- ness returning from Asia as well as new business in the automotive and medical sectors. Mexico is in a great place right

now, benefiting from its proximity to the USA, its business focused on gov- ernment, steady exchange rates and low wage inflation. Many agree that the landed costs of goods manufac- tured in Mexico can compete with anything supplied out of China. What’s more, Mexican workers have very high skills, the country has solid infrastructure, and has a well devel- oped supply chain. On Wednesday the team turned

to the topic of Automotive Electron- ics, and Mark Northrup of IEC Elec- tronics was joined on stage by Jeff Timms and Brain Smith of ASM. The team discussed the opportuni- ties in the automotive industry that stem from the trends towards driver- less or assisted vehicles and the de- sire of consumers to continue their connected life inside their vehicles. Automotive electronics as an in-

dustry is changing and as the supply chain of the car makers collides with that of fast moving consumer elec- tronics, new players, new partner- ships and new challenges come to the fore. DEK and SIPLACE have been active in developing solutions in this market for many years and as a re- sult of the integration of the two brands under ASM Assembly Sys- tems seem well equipped to support this trend and perhaps bridge some of the gaps between these two supply chains. Also in a strong position to sup-

port both elements are many compa- nies in the EMS sector, alluded to by Mark who has experience as an auto- motive OEM and as a contract man- ufacturer.

Internet of Manufacturing The last topic for debate is per-

haps one of the trickier ones and ASM’s Gunter Schindler, COO of the Placement Division of ASM, joined Philip to discuss this along with Francois Monette, Co-President and Co-Founder, Cogiscan Inc. The topic

CIRCUITS

was Industry 4.0 and IoM (Internet of Manufacturing). Philip began by explaining the

premise behind IoM and the require- ment to provide machines, software and solutions that are IoM-ready. Gunter went on to discuss the princi- ples of Industry 4.0 and how it could sit upon an IoM foundation and pro- vide the expertise needed to gain real value from the data that IoM was ca- pable of providing. As IoM ready, a machine would

need to be able to sense all of the in- puts, be they material or human, record all the process parameters, and then communicate them exter- nally. This foundation can form the basis for a much smarter system that sits on top, learning and thinking

and using expert knowledge and ex- perience to provide the best outcome from a machine, a line or even a fully integrated IoM ready supply chain. Mexico is a key manufacturing

region for the Americas, wearables are exciting and will come in many forms, and we need to be ready to deal with their complex demands. The automotive industry continues to demand more from its electronics as we take our connected lives into our cars and rely more on technology to drive for us, and IoM, along with industry 4.0, can provide solutions to make it all happen seamlessly, effi- ciently and effectively, with trace- ability built in. The electronics industry cer-

tainly doesn’t stand still! What ASM did well during these

sessions, as well as selecting relevant and important topics, was to bring to- gether external voices from up and down the value chain to share points of view with their own experts, who are clearly actively preparing to sup- port the technologies, regions and trends discussed. These kinds of discussions add

a good deal of value to any event, and place ASM at the center of the key debates in the industry, showing the company’s capability as a technology partner. Please look out for the videos of
