BUSINESS TRAVELLERS HAVE ALWAYS had a lot to worry about: from filling out expense reports to concerns about flight delays. But today’s business traveller has another worry – their ad-hoc use of wifi day passes and mobile data roaming means that businesses across Europe have been overspending on connectivity by a massive £2.4 billion per year (iPass wifi Cost Index Report, Feb 2014). High international roaming costs mean that business travellers have an increasingly ‘wifi first’ mentality; for these, a key barrier to effective working outside the office is a lack of simple access to wifi networks. Many find the free networks insecure and slow. Fee-based networks are costly, and both have cumbersome login and registration procedures, which put off users. Yet business travellers rely on wifi to stay productive and connected to what matters most: from enabling email and access to apps like Google Docs, to Skype and online maps. Business travellers today
are fully equipped with all the devices they need – but what’s the use of all of these devices if their usage needs to be limited when travelling? A traveller who can’t connect when they want to becomes unproductive and frustrated. In this environment, travellers need to be enabled with access to a global wifi network to allow them to work, cost effectively, and without hassle, on a single log-in, wherever they are in the world.

BBT LINKEDIN GROUP: RESPONSES TO REPORT ON THE RISK MANAGEMENT SESSION AT THE BBT FORUM (SEE P18) RISK CAN NOT BE ELIMINATED but must be mitigated as far as possible, as this involves business travellers not going ‘off piste’ by using untried, untested and unmanaged service providers. Statistically, I think I am correct in saying a traveller is most vulnerable when in a vehicle, so particularly pertinent in my category – ground transportation.
Peter Nixon Groundscope
WHEN THINKING ABOUT THE RISKS to business travellers you need to think laterally. The most respected airlines and hotels provide peace of mind that aircraft are mechanically sound and airworthy, and that hotels are safe with room security and fire exit strategies. But does your travel policy consider the provision of area knowledge and security issues? Having travelled on business years ago, I was enamoured by the five-star hotel and the free time in the evenings. I didn’t even consider that just walking down the road a few hundred yards might put me in danger. This isn’t scaremongering, but surely duty-of-care should also be applied to informing travellers how to prepare for business trips, whether this is understanding local customs and dangers as well as immunisations and currencies. RESPONSES TO FLYBE- STOBART AIR NEW ROUTES FROM SOUTHEND: ARE WE LIKELY TO see Stobart flights from Carlisle to Southend or anywhere else in the near future?
HOPEFULLY FLYBE WILL resume the Edinburgh service, which Easyjet mysteriously ended.
EDINBURGH WOULD BE GREAT and Carlisle a fantastic idea, but I’m not sure the latter would get sufficient passenger numbers (I’d love to be proved wrong though).
WITH FLIGHT EXPANSIONS now in place, it would be a great gesture for Airport Angel [lounge membership scheme] and Stobart to negotiate a customer service to offer such a valuable facility for the business traveller – what do you think?
THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS for the residents of Southend and those in the catchment area. Here’s to the continued success of Stobart Air and Flybe.
