Content is the big driver for ISE 2014, according to Mike Blackman, ISE managing director. The 11th edition of the show promises to be the largest yet, by any measure. “We’ve grown, by 6%, up to 952


exhibitors,” said Blackman. “That’s a big increase, especially in these times.” Pre-registration figures had not been released but “it’s definitely got a lot larger. We’re expecting great feedback [from exhibitors].” According to Blackman, ISE 2014


features a lot more content beyond the exhibitor booths. There are new show features, such as the Immersive Sound Experience and the Commercial and Residential Solutions Theatres, and more Professional Development

Particularly close to Dodd’s heart is providing members greater flexibility in fulfilling their training needs, allowing them to identify specific topics of interest rather than requiring them to choose an entire course, all of which may not be relevant. “It’s important to recognise,” he noted, “that small businesses can’t afford to dedicate extended periods of time to training. And – it needs to be cost-effective.” Dodd is also enthused by what he calls ‘proof of competency’ training, and has been working with the Electrical Contractors Association to provide certification for those working on a multi-disciplinary site. He also notes the close


relationship between technical understanding and profitability. “Fixing just one problem after


CEDIA will show a similar result,” said Blackman.


He is also enthusiastic at the reception to the pre-show events,


which took place yesterday. “There were almost 170 attendees at our third Smart Building Conference, which was really great, really positive. Smart Building as a brand is getting very strong,” he said. Blackman also spoke highly of the inaugural Investor Showcase event [see page 6] to better connect investors with manufacturers. He explained: “It’s not really about what it brings to this ISE, it’s what it will bring in four or five years’ time, because these are companies that are going to be our customers. What we are trying to do here is build the forward stream for our business. We’re investing in our future; indeed, we’re investing in our industry.”


There’s also a greater focus on helping attendees from non- technical backgrounds to get the most from the show, through hosted buyer programmes, which bring groups of end-users to the show, as well as technical tours. “For 20% of our attendees this is their first time at ISE. It’s a big show and we need to help some of the end-users focus, by doing things that are very specific to what they are interested in.” Specialist partners play a


valuable role here. “When it comes to specific areas, we like to get specialists in to help us talk to those attendees – people like SCHOMS [in education] and the AV User Group. For the first time the Sports Video Group is having a conference at ISE. Partners such as these allow us to deliver bespoke experiences for focused groups of end-customers.”
