he SME population is made up of many different types of business, but all have one thing in common and that is fi nances. Setting up and running a business requires
no special skill in accounting, so it is no wonder that when the business starts to grow – or falter – fi nances become a major issue. The need for much closer fi nancial management grows rapidly. If the businessman or woman doesn’t recognise this, we can be fairly certain that their bank manager is pointing it out! Started in 1999 by Glenn Lawrence, 8020 Financial Management was created to provide that critical support and skill set for SMEs to take back control of their fi nances and make sure their chances of success are much improved. The 8020 franchisee works as an outsource fi nance director, using the most advanced technology including the brand’s bespoke software. In 2005, when accountants were just starting to think about cloud-based solutions, 8020 took its Sage accounting tools to a fully internet-hosted platform, allowing franchisees and clients to work simultaneously on data sets from anywhere in the world. The last 12 months saw the launch of the 8020 Dashboard software, which is now embedded in many of the brand’s larger clients’ businesses. It is proving a revelation as pages of numbers are transformed into KPI charts and graphs. An 8020 Financial Management franchisee’s core activity is the building of a fi nancial model of every client’s business, which produces a comprehensive picture of the fi nances and enables franchisees to forecast and focus on the future of the business. Producing detailed fi nancial forecasts and performance analysis via the integrated 8020 Dashboard, gives the client real knowledge and control of their
business and places them in the best position to make key decisions. Franchisees work typically between one
and three days a month on- and off-site with each client. With the freedom to plan their diary around their own lifestyle, it is clear that 8020 franchisees have time very much under their control. The 8020 franchisee is typically from either a fi nancial background such as management accounting or banking or may indeed have run their own businesses, or worked in senior management/director roles. What they all have in common is the tangible passion for being involved at boardroom level with entrepreneurs who want to make their businesses the most successful they can be.
“8020 franchisees have time very much under their control”
One thing that concerns most
prospective franchisees is the acquisition of clients. 8020 Financial Management has 14 years’ experience and has honed its methods and processes, ones that are proven repeatedly, with 92 per cent of franchisees achieving their fi rst-year targets and 87 per cent their second-year numbers. The franchise attributes this level of success to the intense mentoring it provides throughout the fi rst critical 12 months. Franchisee’s marketing plans are reviewed and updated each week in a conference call. All past meetings are debriefed and future meetings thoroughly planned and researched to ensure the development of strategies that best suit the franchisee. This is complemented
by ongoing central offi ce support from qualifi ed accounting and marketing staff and the founding director. Franchisees attend regular meetings to spend time developing and sharing the most successful marketing ideas, they also enjoy the freedom to accept referral business from outside their territories. All franchisees also have the telephone support of a leading fi rm of lawyers on all legal matters that arise for the benefi t of their clients and similarly the support of a national top 10 accountancy fi rm on any technical tax or accounting issues. All prospective franchisees have the opportunity to speak to any current franchisee and in some cases will accept an invitation to spend a day in the fi eld to make sure 8020 is right for them. n
