ecord export levels, rising manufacturing output, a growing construction sector and consumer spending on the up – all are pointers to the start of
a recovery in the UK economy and good news for business confidence. Minster Cleaning Services has
weathered the recession well and, during this time, has consolidated its position as one of the country’s most successful franchises and a leading force in office cleaning. By investing in management systems that take care of many of the routine daily office functions, as well as providing valuable marketing data, the company has given franchisees the tools and the time to concentrate on developing their businesses. Liverpool and Wirral franchisee, David Charlton, has particularly benefitted from Minster’s expertise in providing cleaning services to the healthcare sector. As he explains: “Cleaning surgeries requires specialist knowledge and a detailed scheme of work; by delivering a cleaning strategy that covers all key elements and functional areas, we are now helping 30 NHS practices in our area to combat healthcare-acquired infections whilst fully complying with Care Quality Commission requirements.”
Ex-Marks & Spencer finance manager David started his franchise in 1999; he was named Minster Franchisee of the Year in 2012 and has built up a £1.2million-plus turnover business with a range of loyal clients including Ronald McDonald House Charity and the new King David Campus. So far this year, he has seen a welcome rise in the number of new contracts awarded to the branch and is very optimistic about
the future: “There are several major projects in the pipeline that will have a positive impact on the region’s economic prospects including the Liverpool Two deep water container terminal, the Wirral Waters project, the rebuild of the Royal Liverpool Hospital, the Mersey Gateway crossing and the Liverpool Bio Campus. We have strengthened our management team and are focussing on the new business opportunities that this will create.”
“The combination of outstanding people managers with our business systems allows all our franchisees to build substantial, valuable businesses”
Managing director Mike Parker says that Minster franchisees are well placed to take advantage of future growth: “Commercial cleaning is an essential business service, which appeals to a broad client base, and the size of Minster’s territories gives almost unlimited scope for expansion. Our business model has worked well for over 30 years; the combination of dynamic, self-motivated and outstanding people-managers together with our proven business systems allows all our franchisees to build substantial, valuable businesses whether they buy an established business or a new territory.” Average annual turnover is now well over £700,000 across Minster’s 41-branch network and many have achieved annual
sales of over £1million. The total group turnover is £30million.
Minster was established in 1982 and has been a bfa Full Member since 1992. The company provides franchisees with a recognisable and well-trusted brand together with a comprehensive range of support services starting with help for the transition from employment to self- employment. Ongoing support covers important business activities such as bookkeeping, training, marketing, IT and the complex fields of employment law, health and safety and environmental legislation. New franchise opportunities include Cambridge, Doncaster, Durham, Leicester, London, Middlesex, Guildford, Peterborough and Swansea. Initial start-up cost is £28,225+vat, which covers licence, training, computer software and hardware, stationery, machinery, equipment and materials. In addition, between £40,000 and £60,000 working capital will be needed – finance is available from leading banks subject to status. Also, there
are currently established franchise resale opportunities in Bristol, the North West Midlands, South Wales, Dundee and Derbyshire. n
