MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY Wallwork adds non-ferrous furnace capability
Thermal processing and surface engineering specialist, Wallwork Heat Treatment, has commissioned a new 800kg capacity furnace for the processing of aluminium and magnesium products.

he new furnace provides variable heat treatment for cast, forged, wrought or fabricated components from single items of up two cubic metres to batches of components as small as 0.5mm diameter. Simeon Collins, sales and marketing director at Wallwork Heat
Treatment, explained: “Our core business remains the thermal processing and surface coating of high value components for aerospace, motorsport and medical device manufacturers. The new non-ferrous furnace adds to our commercial processing capability and is part of a three year development programme that will see a further significant increase in this capacity.” The furnace is equipped to use a variety of quenchants and
has the capability to achieve a rapid quench time of less than 10 seconds. Very small pressed or cast parts can therefore be processed effectively.

the cold forming process, such as the ‘rotation’ control, which is easily done. On thread rolling, the ED08 monitors introduction and
expulsion positions, oversees the absence of parts between the dies during back-running and helps setup of the alignment. For multi-station headers, Eldes recommends calibration of the force measured at each station. Through a patented software procedure, after calibration ED08 is able to compensate for mechanical interferences that affect the measurements, thus achieving the true value of the force in each station. Many auxiliary functions are included as options: detection of short feed, separation of the production for quality control purposes, alert for quality control, performing of scrapping device up to 500 pieces/min. Core features include memory of the last 20 alarms, easily recalled configuration storage, data collection connection and integration with a SPC system.
Business development manager for the project, Ian Lacey,
commented: “All processes are fully documented for quality assurance purposes, currently to AS9100 standard, and we have on-site laboratory back-up for testing and validation. We can process test items to prove the effectiveness of the treatment before scaling up to full volume processing. Many of our customers welcome the opportunity to have a single source for all their heat treatment needs.” Operating from three UK sites at Manchester, Birmingham and Cambridge, and with a fleet of over 40 vehicles providing collection and delivery, Wallwork provides a turn-around service nationwide. Plans are in hand to increase thermal processing capacity in the company with further investment in equipment expected later in the year.
