Makita BDF459 selected for aircraft maintenance

KLM UK Engineering has selected Makita’s BDF459 brushless drill driver for its UK aircraft maintenance facility based at Norwich Airport.

that require a major strip down and inspection of the aircraft. Checks typically take two to three weeks, as many of the aircraft’s surface panels are unfixed to facilitate internal inspection, this is where the Makita BDF459 drill drivers are proving their value. The BDF459 delivers up to 45Nm of torque with 16 adjustable
torque settings, has a full metal gear drive system and weighs just 1.7kg. The tool features the latest Makita brushless motor technology which reduces motor friction while increasing motor speed and therefore enhancing operational performance. Makita points out that less heat is generated which also improves performance and provides up to twice the run time through battery longevity. The 18V lithium-ion battery has a 22 minute charging time. Wayne Easlea, KLM UK Engineering’s material manager,
commented: “Clearly battery cell technology has moved as fast as the new brushless motor technology and the cost justification for the purchase of the Makita drill drivers was very simple. The brushless motor design also cuts the risks of sparks which is an important safety consideration.” KLM UK Engineering’s new Makita tools have been supplied by specialist tool and aircraft component supplier Monks and Crane, a member of the global Würth Group, who has a supply depot at the Norwich Airport commercial centre.
