PRODUCTS ISO-Chemie achieves ISO 14001
European producer of impregnated foam sealants, ISO-Chemie, has achieved the coveted ISO 14001 environmental certification.
he move follows the implementation of an environmental management system that has been in place at ISO-Chemie for some time and was officially approved in March. It reflects the company’s commitment to continuously improving the environmental effect of its products, and also supports its corporate environmental activities. ISO-Chemie defined a set of measurable environmental objectives including waste disposal measures, the on-going reduction of its power consumption, CO2 emissions and overall improvements to ensure better management of resources, to

gain the accreditation. The company’s product range contains only CFC-free and climate-neutral foams that conform to the latest environmental regulations. ISO-Chemie has also drawn up environmental product declarations (EPDs) for products made from polyethylene, polypropylene and polyurethane foams used in its range of sealing solutions, with the company saying it is the first in its field to do so. These declarations disclose a comprehensive balance sheet of all the environmental effects associated with the manufacturing of these products. It also details the input of energy and other resources and the extent to which the products contribute, or not, to the
greenhouse effect, acid rain, over fertilisation, destruction of the ozone layer and smog creation. ISO-Chemie has already reduced its carbon footprint by installing a photovoltaic array on the roof of the company building,
allowing the company to produce around a fifth of its own power consumption needs on average every year. Peter Thompson, ISO Chemie’s UK general manager, said: “We constantly look at smarter and more efficient ways of production, cutting waste and reducing carbon emissions, so gaining ISO 14001 is a natural progression for us.”
Perfect bonding for rubber and metal
WEICON has developed an adhesive, WEICON Rubber Metal Adhesive GMK 2410, for bonding critical combinations of rubber and metal.

EICON GMK is a solvent-based polychloroprene (CR) contact adhesive used for strong and flexible full-surface bonding of rubber to rubber and rubber to metal. The adhesive cures very fast, has a strong
adhesion and is permanently elastic. GMK also bonds other materials such ascellular rubber (e.g. neoprene), leather, felt, insulating material, textiles, wood and many plastics (it is less suitable for expanded polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, flexible PVC foam and artificial PVC leather). After curing, the joint is resistant to humidity. WEICON says its GMK can be used for many different
applications, including bonding rubber to metal plates or for fixing rubber profiles, door seals or insulation material. The new contact adhesive is suitable for the motor vehicles industry, for
the trailer or container industry and can be used as economic universal adhesive in many other industrial sectors. The new contact adhesive is very easy to use. The parts to be bonded must be clean and dry and free of dust or grease. Roughening the surfaces increases the bonding power efficiently. Prior to use, WEICON points out that the GMK 2410 must be
stirred carefully, and then applied evenly in a thin layer onto both surfaces using a brush or spatula. The drying time is approximately five to ten minutes depending on layer thickness, ambient temperature and air humidity. On absorbing surfaces like felt, a second adhesive layer should be applied when the first layer has dried. As soon as the surfaces are dry but still a little bit tacky, the parts must be joined with short but strong pressure. Once the evaporation time has passed, the adhesive must be applied again.
