TEAMWORK

ACTIVITY 13 Work in pairs. Now read the Teamwork text carefully to find the answers to the exam-word questions that have been set on it. Just fill in the gaps. Refer to the Internet text table for help.

Again, don’t expect each student to do everything. Let each pair do some and share with others. However, it is important that all students try to do the questions leſt completely blank as those are the easiest, and most likely to be asked at this level. Tey are indicated in bold in the leſt-hand column in this Lecturer’s Guide.

Example question from Teamwork reading text

As a group you are going to do interview research. Analyse the task.

Your answer. Fill the gaps.

Te first task for the group is to agree/decide on the overall outcome for the interview research, e.g. writing a research report. Te group must then decide on the role of each group member. Te group must then work on the task analysis. Tey need to work out all the tasks that need to be done, like a drawing up a questionnaire, doing interviews, Internet research, typing the report and creating a visual representation. Finally, the group must plan meeting dates and each member must write the dates down.

Comment on the construction of the word “Teamwork”.

Compare the different roles taken on by members of a group. What do they have in common?

Contrast the role of the timekeeper with that of the co-ordinator.

Teamwork is a compound word made from team and work. To be a team means members share knowledge, skills and time. Everyone contributes and works together at the same job.

Te four roles are similar as they all aim at making the group work together as a team. A leader encourages everyone to contribute and leads the group to take decisions. A recorder writes down the decisions. A timekeeper stops the group wasting time and keeps them to a time limit. A co-ordinator gets the team to meet at an agreed time and place. Each role is focused on helping the group achieve its outcomes.

A co-ordinator’s role is to get the group to meet at an agreed time and place. Her/his role is to inform people of the date, time and place, e.g. by sending an SMS before the meeting. However, a time keeper’s role is completely different. A timekeeper stops the group wasting time during the meeting by keeping them to the time limit in discussions.
