Additional material, including activities


Additional activity 1 Let the students create a collage of emotive words, slogans and logos cut from newspaper and magazine adverts. Explain to them that a collage is a form of art in which various materials, such as photographs and pieces of paper, are arranged and stuck to a backing, e.g. cardboard.


Additional activity 2 Bring newspaper classifieds to class. Ask the students to scan and see if they can find any classified adverts related to their core – e.g. a job advert for a receptionist or a display advertisement for a fax machine. Let them cut out the adverts and make a collage.


Additional activity 3 Preparation 1. Make copies or transparencies of the two Spur adverts.


Let the students compare the 2 Spur advertisements – one aimed at adults and one aimed at children. Let them also discuss the AIDA principle. Mention the following aspects to the students before you discuss the AIDA principle: Both Spur adverts are bright and colourful. Tey are A4 size. Te Spur logo (the Red Indian) and the Spur slogan (A taste for life) appear on both the adverts.


ATTENTION Adults: the colour photo of the steak, cheese, chips, onion rings, bottle of red wine and full glass of wine; the heading Spur Yellowstone steak in capital letters. Children: the colourful picture of the Red Indian child eating a burger and the photo of the lunch box, ice tea and kids’ burger. INTEREST Adults: the steak is 200 grams and there is a choice of rump and sirloin. It is served with onion rings and chips or a baked potato OR two vegetables. You may also order a bottle of wine or a glass of wine if you want to. Children: Tey can have a beef, chicken or soya burger. Te burger, lunch box and ice tea cost R38.95 or you can buy the lunch box separately for R14.95. DESIRE Adults: many people like steak. Tey may want to go and eat out at the Spur. It looks like a healthy meal with meat, cheese, chips and salad. Children: most kids love a hamburger. Tey will be very happy to get a lunch box and ice tea free with their meal. ACTION Adults: the special is valid from 1 June–18 July 2012. You had better visit the Spur if you don’t want to miss out on this deal. Children: the offer is valid from 28 September 2012 while stocks last. You had better visit the Spur if you don’t want to miss out on this deal.


Assessment You may wish to use the Spur adverts for an assessment instead of a discussion.
