models, which command the highest prices, as well worth worth getting behind – bringing in the sales and profit

“They see upright bagless ”

Colour: Another increasingly dominant trend, begun a few seasons back with some bright and vibrant shades but turning more Autumnal now, following trends on the catwalk, interior design and cars. Look out for brown and grey with accent colours such as mustard, cassis, dark red and midnight blue.

Steam cleaning and robotics Steam or deep cleaning is an area which

remains niche – and traditionally expensive – but is definitely breaking through. Consumers are much more used now to the concept of 'bar pressure' delivering steam, as they've seen it on espresso machines and steam generator irons. So it makes it easier for them to understand the concept of steam cleaning. Some products are now available at the sub £100 mark too, so again an encouraging factor.

Robotics is another niche area in floorcare, currently with very few players, and prices at around £500. Those involved think it can only increase in popularity, particularly among 'tech savvy' consumers, who want to get behind the latest moves and like anyone, want a product which will deliver results. Products to watch in steam cleaning include an easy-use powerful product, with an SRP of around £89.99, while in robotics it's all about on- board sensors and cameras so the product doesn't fall downstairs and can remember where it has cleaned.

Floorcare is a good product area for independents to be involved in as consumers will turn to brands and new ideas to help achieve results. It is a stable market, with regular but manageable price rises to bring some healthy profit. There is some talk though of the market being devoid of anything new (possibly the robotics manufacturers might argue the contrary.) A continuing demand to see the 'iPad or flat screen of vacuum cleaners' may well serve to increase product development. ■
