The ETLEU Mark does


not have origins in any particular country, and is recognised across the EU as a mark of safety.


The ENEC safety mark is from a regional certification scheme that recognises the testing of specific laboratory or NB. Each member of one of these schemes will have a designator number to accompany these types of marks. In the ENEC example shown, Intertek’s designation is 14. Obtaining an Approval Mark is a rigorous process that not only requires successful testing to and compliance with the relevant Standard, but also a factory inspection to ensure that the production method and


components used are consistent with the sample tested. Approval also requires what is called ‘ongoing surveillance’ whereby random samples are checked periodically by the certification body to ensure that items produced on an ongoing basis are identical to the items tested.


What types of goods carry Approval marks and where can I find them? Approval marks can usually be found on domestic electrical controls such as plugs and switches and on home appliances – most often on the rating plate, typically on the back or bottom, or inside larger appliances like refrigerators. Some appliances also have stickers on the front or swing tags to promote their safety Approval at Point of Sale.


Optional performance marks


Some manufacturers also choose to secure ‘Performance Certification’ for their products. Again, many types of performance marks exist, but Intertek’s example is illustrated. This may indicate such characteristics as ‘easy to
