display the new labels and for advertising to refer to them will become mandatory. But manufacturers can opt to supply the new labels before then and many of them have been doing so for most of 2011.

This summer we also saw new Regulations published for domestic air conditioners. A key aspect of the new label is that it comes as a single coloured label supplied by the manufacturer. Because it has pictograms instead of text there is no need to translate it so the

same label can be supplied throughout the EU. Other products

Electric tumble dryers, combined washer dryers and electric ovens still have the A-G label under their existing Directives. Until new Regulations are published they will continue to use the same labels as they do at the moment. By the beginning of 2012 we expect to see more Regulations for water heaters (including electric showers) and coffee machines with boilers, cookers (hobs, ovens and grills) and vacuum cleaners and dryers also in the pipeline. The Ecodesign Directive covers all “energy- related” products so we also expect to see new Regulations (and labels) for a range of other products, not just those that use energy, but products such as taps and glazing. And there are already plans to review the Ecodesign Framework Directive with suggestions that it should cover all products, not just those that use energy, and that other aspects of their lifecycle impact, such as materials, might also be subject to regulation. ■
