The world of digital listening


DAB products come in a variety of shapes, sizes and prices, and their functionality increases at a rapid rate. It’s not only first time buyers who will need your advice, but also customers who are replacing a DAB product and may not be aware of the latest features.


Despite the popularity of TV viewing and the plethora of internet entertainment sites, the UK remains a nation of radio lovers. Figures from the radio audience research company Rajar reveal that 92% of the population tune into the radio every week – a new high. What’s more, digital radio is taking an increasing share of the radio market, and now accounts for 27% of listening. The largest digital radio platform by far is DAB, which accounts for around 17% of all radio listening. In the same way that television broadcasting has gone digital, the government and the DAB radio industry would like to see a migration from analogue radio to digital. A Digital Radio Action Plan has been set in motion, with the aim of achieving this objective. One in three homes now has a DAB radio and almost two in five adults have access to DAB. Some 13 million DAB radios have been sold since launch and A-branded DAB products start at under £30. There are hundreds of DAB products on the market including standalones, portables, clock radios, docking stations and music systems, so there should be few problems in finding the DAB product that suits your customer’s listening needs. DAB coverage is now more than 85%, and the BBC is building 39 new transmitters and will reach 93% coverage of its national services by the end of 2011. Although there’s a good chance that DAB is available in your customer’s region, a quick postcode check on the Digital Radio UK website (www.ukdigitalradio.com) will confirm this. One of the key DAB sales drivers is choice, so describe the number of DAB services available and the exclusive content that DAB offers.





Ease of use is another key selling point, and it’s a good idea to demonstrate how quick and easy it is to set-up and operate a DAB radio.





Don’t overwhelm your customer with options: try and determine the level of functionality they want from the product.
