MAX from MAC and get an additional discount for taking public transportation. Zoolites are a delight, but dress appropri- ately for the weather. The gates open at 5 p.m.

Set the alarm on Wednesday, Dec. 14 for the annual Lights and Lobbies tour of downtown Portland. This special event for early risers departs on foot from MAC at 6 a.m. Participants assemble in the MAC lobby starting at 5:45 a.m. The route is approximately three miles. The Walking and Hiking committee hosts refresh- ments in the Reading Lounge from 7:30-9 a.m. There is no charge to participate, but registration assists with planning for adequate amounts of culinary delights. Call 503-517-7539, or register online on the Walking and Hiking homepage under Special Events.

A long-standing Portland tradition is the drive through historic Peacock Lane when the entire neighborhood is deco- rated. Traffic can be a nightmare. Start a new tradition this year by parking a block or two away and walking the Lane on the newly designated pedestrians-only night, which is Thursday, Dec. 15. MAC walkers regularly scout and explore new areas boasting great seasonal lights and decorations; so spontaneous walks may be added to the holiday schedule. Check the Hiking Hotline, 503-517-7518, in December to take advantage of these seasonal opportunities. Remember, too, that holiday decorations at MAC are some of the best in the city, so be sure to include the clubhouse in those holiday viewing plans. WM
