’Tis the Season for a Holiday Stroll H

oliday schedules fill up quickly with seasonal activities, many of them more on the culinary and sedentary side of the dial rather than the active side. Enjoy these events, but consider balancing them with holiday outings that include a bit more activity, such as walking. The Walking and Hiking committee offers organized holiday walks and encourages participating in seasonal walks organized by others.

For the past 13 years, the first holiday walk of the season has been the two- mile walk through the holiday lights at Portland International Raceway’s Winter Wonderland. On the first Monday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 28, the course opens from 5-9 p.m. for pedestrians only. The flat, paved surface is wheelchair, stroller and wagon friendly. Leashed dogs are welcome and may even get a treat along

the way. Parking is free, but there is a charge at the gate for adults. Proceeds are donated to designated chari- ties each year. MAC walkers and hikers actually instigated this walk in 1999 and

are pleased that this has become a popular community event. Everyone is encouraged to partake of this walk on Monday, Nov. 28. Consider parking a vehicle at MAC and taking MAX. New on the schedule this year is an evening walk on Thursday, Dec. 1 to view selected holiday lights and decorations in the city. Throughout 2011, the Walking and Hiking committee has offered monthly First Thursday Art Walks. This holiday walk is a variation on that theme. Exact

destinations are determined earlier in the week as holiday decorations and window displays are set up. The plan is to view some of the best in downtown Portland. The route is likely no longer than three miles. Estimated departure from MAC is 4:30 p.m., but check the Hiking Hotline, 503-517-7518, for last-minute updates. Take advantage of Second Tuesday rates at Oregon Zoo on Tuesday, Dec. 13. Take
