s a trustee, I have met many people and participated in a number of club events I might not have met or done otherwise. It has been an eye- opening experience and has truly enriched my life. While I began my term believing that MAC offered a variety of opportunities for

busy, enthusiastic members and guests throughout the day enjoying the club. Our remodeled Men’s Bar, MACtinis and new card room all help to enhance member experiences. MAC has created a model for member involvement and satis- faction that is envied by many clubs across the country and not easily duplicated.

members, I now believe that it must be truly unique even among its peers. When I enter the club, I am always amazed at the positive energy and activity that greets me.

The fall months are particularly busy. On a recent Friday night, the club hosted a junior dance with a sellout crowd, Family Friday, the start of Lobster Bash – also with a sellout crowd feasting on amazing lobster dishes from Chef Boulot and his staff – and a Stadium Terrace crowd enjoying a local high school foot- ball game. These events, which included hundreds of club members, were handled seemingly effortlessly by our skilled staff. In addition to the myriad of member events that kick off the fall season, it is also a very busy time for committees. We begin budget season, start the nominating process to select the next class of trustees for election in 2012, and the club begins to prepare for the busy holiday season.

Busy fall at MAC

This year we add a lottery to the mix. This event only happens every few years and is an opportunity for members to propose their friends and family for membership.

The MAC continues to have more applications than it does openings for membership. Your committees and staff have worked hard to provide athletic and social programs and events to serve a diverse membership. Our roots are as a world-class athletic club, and over the years, we have expanded our appeal by offering a variety of social and learning opportunities for individuals and fami- lies. Our energy comes from seeing

I mentioned budget season. By now the process is well underway, consuming hundreds of participant hours as the committees meet and try to balance the club’s continuing need for increased revenues against keeping dues increases manageable. Just like in our own lives, costs increase. We are faced with the reality that we can adjust our spending, increase revenues or some combination of both. The committees do a fantastic job of representing member interests in this process, making sure our commit- ment to providing quality services and programs for members continues, while also keeping our facility current. I like to think that our budget is divided roughly into these segments: providing the necessary staff and expen- ditures to operate our programs and facilities, and funding of depreciation. It is this last expenditure that is the most confusing for members. As we use and enjoy our club, each of us uses up pieces of its assets – furniture, carpeting, kitchens, locker rooms, equipment, etc. By including a cost for this in member dues, we ensure that replacements and repairs in future years are funded and we pay for what we use as we use it. It is through good fiscal management such as this that we are able to have a club that is in great financial condition and continues to flourish, even in hard times. I am proud and honored to have served on the MAC Board during these busy years. I believe that we accom- plished some important goals to help keep our club relevant for generations to come. During my term, I met many dedicated, skillful and involved members who will be the future leaders of this club. Four of them are the 2012 trustee candidates. WM
