Terrace Enclosure Work Set to Begin A


t a special meeting in September the MAC Board of Trustees approved plans to proceed with the enclosure of the Exercise and Conditioning Terrace. This is a major step towards achieving some of the long-term visions identified in the facility master plan and the Athletic Neighborhood Concept. Work to complete the E&C Terrace enclosure is underway. Actual construc- tion should commence in early November, with an anticipated completion date in July 2012. Construction occurs in phases to minimize the impact to members and programming, but members should antici- pate some disruptions. The project encompasses: • enclosure of the E&C Terrace • renovation of Studio 1 and Studio 3 • conversion of the offices between Studio 1 and Studio 3 to become a new access corridor


• conversion of Studio 4 to fitness staff offices • basement level hallway refurbishment


One significant benefit of the enclosure is an increase in studio inventory. See the Aug. 2011 Winged M for the floor plan. The new studio resulting from the enclo- sure allows for expanded class offerings and provides more flexibility for program scheduling.


A second benefit of the enclosure is the expansion of the E&C Room. The addi-


tional equipment should alleviate some of the congestion that occurs during various times of the day.


A new access corridor is planned between Studio 1 and Studio 3. The access to each of these studios relocates to this new corridor. This relieves significant congestion currently experienced in the main corridor of the basement level.

The refurbishments to Studio I and Studio III are long overdue. Each studio, when completed, will have better storage, improved sound, and enhanced air flow. The E&C, Dance, and Karate committees have requested a wood floor for Studio III for years. This project fulfills that request. In addition to the better flow on the basement level, the current hallway from Joe’s to the E&C Room is being spruced up with new paint, new flooring and sound-abatement materials to help contain noise from this busy corridor. Construction means disruption, but every effort is being made to mitigate it. The following are challenges members can anticipate:


• The east end of the E&C Room is impacted when the existing wall is removed. The E&C Room remains open at all times but expect some closures in this eastern area, and somewhat disruptive construction noise during certain times. Members who are concentrating on their workout may not even notice the construc- tion activity.


• Studios 1 and 3 have construction occurring on nearly all sides. Each is closed when being remodeled. The plan is to move classes to the new studio while renovation occurs. After the first studio renovation is complete the next studio renovation occurs.


• What is now Studio 4 becomes the new offices for fitness staff. Staff is displaced when their existing offices convert to a new access corridor. Studio 4 was earmarked for this use back when the junior weight room was relocated to the east (green) gym during the phase I implementation of the Athletic Neighborhood Concept. Those changes resulted in expanded Pilates and stretching areas. Construction in the current Studio 4 should have relatively minor impacts to members.


• The existing basement level hallway provides the only east/west access. Because of this, the work in this corridor occurs for the most part at night when the club is closed and members should see little impact. WM
