Administr Ative Faces In The Club

The MAC mother-and-son combo of Laura and Connor Ford experienced success in their first triathlon in September. The Fords participated in the “Tri-it” division for first-timers at the Stumptown Triathlon at Blue Lake Park in Fairview. The course included a 1/4-mile swim, 12-mile bike and 5K run. Connor, 13, won the race and Laura was the first woman and third overall. Connor is also one of four Oregon boys selected to attend the U.S. Club Soccer national ID2 camp in Frisco, Texas this month. Husband and father Andrew Ford has competed in triathlons for several years, and this year Laura and Connor gave it a try, increasing their practice time in MAC’s pools. This may not be the last of the Fords to try a tri. Emily, 11, already plays soccer, and was cheering her mom and brother on.

MAC fitness trainer Brian Karsten finished fourth in the fitness chal- lenge at the IDEA World Fitness Convention in Los Angeles in July. More than 5,000 trainers from across the globe partici- pated, with a showdown among the top 10 taking place in Los Angeles. For finishing in the top five, Karsten won a week- long trip to IMG Sports Performance Institute in Florida, $1,000 worth of Under Armour gear and a gym bag full of clothes and shoes from sponsors. Karsten joined MAC in June after an internship in the Human Performance Lab. He is now a personal trainer, and works with children in the junior sports department.

Member Madison D. Cameron won the ASPCA Maclay Regional Finals horse show in Washington in September. It’s been five years since someone from Oregon won. The victory quali- fies Cameron to compete in the ASPCA Maclay Finals in Kentucky this month. Cameron, 18 and an honor student at Jesuit, overcame a broken ankle that she suffered just eight weeks before the event during a horse show in Bend. She is also the Oregon Hunter Jumper Association’s Junior Representative and was the recipient of the Association’s Year End High Point Equitation Rider and Junior Sportsmanship Awards in January.

Masters swimmer Brent Washburne brought home seven medals from the U.S. Masters Swimmers Long Course Nationals at Auburn University in Alabama in August. Washburne, who made the trip along with MAC athletic member Ben Weston and seven other Oregon swimmers, swam against 75 men in the 50-54 age group, one of the more crowded age groups in the field. Washburne won indi- vidual medals in the 200-meter butterfly, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle and three different relays, helping the Oregon masters team to fifth- place among men’s teams and seventh place among mixed teams.

Sybil Pfaff, in MAC’s Member Events Department, won the award for Best Use of Alternative Materials and nearly brought home the People’s Choice Award during the Art of the Party Table Top Competition. The Portland Chapter of the International Special Events Society hosted the competition at the Portland Art Museum Sept. 27. Contestants developed a theme and created a table-scape for a 60-inch round table. Competing against large companies like The Party Place and Peter Corvallis Productions, Pfaff created a “PDX Picnic” theme that included an umbrella suspended in the air as the centerpiece.

Lisa Virtue started as MAC’s new Aquatics Director on Monday, Oct. 31. Virtue comes to MAC from the parks and recre- ation department of Mill Valley, Calif., where she was aquatics and fitness supervisor. Prior to Mill Valley, Virtue served as assistant general manager for the Wave House Athletic Club in San Diego, and the aquatics director for the Kids Club Fun and Fitness Center in Vancouver, Wash. Virtue is an Oregon State graduate, and worked at the Osborn Aquatics Center while in school. She has been a competitive swimmer, played and coached water polo, taught water exercise and swim lessons, and been a lifeguard and life- guard instructor.
