Synchro Successful in Sacramento
T
he synchro masters wrapped up their 2011 season at the US Synchro Masters Championships in Sacramento, California, Oct. 13-16. Fourteen team members participated in nine routine events across six age groups from the 20s to the 80s, claiming seven national titles, with gold medal winning performances in all but two of their events. Despite having a smaller group this year, the MAC team still managed to place third in the overall high- point award, earning yet another trophy to add to their mezzanine display case. And while they weren’t winning medals, the team participated in a successful world- record attempt for the largest float pattern as part of a benefit for breast cancer aware- ness.
Gold medal performances include member coach Liz Palmer winning her first solo gold medal in the 20-29 age group. Jennifer Lexa won solo gold in the 40-49 age group and teamed with partner Jeanine Cavagnaro to capture another gold in the 50-59 duet event. The 30-39 duet of Nikki Berlin and assistant coach Lucie Svrcinova posted the high score of the meet, earning them gold. Berlin, Cavagnaro, Lexa, Palmer and Svrcinova teamed with Lynn Pettitt, Kim Stetson and Julie Vigeland for a win in the 40-49 age group team event. The same group teamed with Jini Miller for gold in the combo event. Finally, the historic 80-89 team brought home yet another gold medal. Unique to this year’s event was a
Guinness World Record attempt at the largest synchronized swimming float forma- tion: “The World’s Largest Human Floating Pink Ribbon.” This was an educational and fundraising event to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The masters are enjoying a brief break from regular practices, then will resume training for the 2012 season in December. As for the juniors, the growing program added thirteen new team members after the fall try-outs and the coaches are still seeking more young participants for both the team and class programs.
