We have a close relationship, which helps enormously”

Have you encountered any problems along the way? We haven’t encountered anything we couldn’t overcome with the support of the management team – plus a bit of ingenuity and hard work.

PACK & SEND Sam and Jamie Ireland

Franchisee for Belfast East, Sam Ireland had over 25 years’ experience in the freight and logistics industry in Ireland with a senior role that kept him away from home and working long hours. His son, Jamie, had been working as a freelance journalist since graduation.

Why did you decide to go into franchising and why this brand? I was looking for a change after 25 years in freight and logistics. I investigated a number of franchise opportunities but decided to proceed with PACK & SEND as it looked to be the best fit for me.

Why did you decide to go into business with a family member? My son was also looking for a change in direction having spent several years working as a freelance journalist. The timing worked really well for both of us.

How do you divide the work? We share the work equally; however, his strengths are on the operational side where I have more experience with admin and customs processes.

What are the benefits of working with a family member? We have a very close relationship and it helps enormously when we are working together. I know I can rely on him.

How has business been? The first year went almost exactly as we had forecast. Year two has been a pattern of steady growth – we are starting to turn some really good numbers and hopefully will continue the growth.

And how has the support been ongoing? The support is always there, either at the end of a phone or in person at the various meetings and events throughout the year.

How has your life changed? In my previous role I was group operations manager in a logistics company. The position required long hours and a significant amount of out-of-hours working. It felt like it was never-ending and was the prime reason to make the change. Since I took on the franchise my work-life balance has improved significantly. I get home earlier and I find I have a lot less stress in my life.

What advice would you give to anyone considering a franchise? If you feel it is right for you then go ahead and do it – I just wish I had done it earlier.

What are your plans for the future? I want to continue to grow the business – we have reached the point where spending time on direct sales is more difficult, as we are constantly busy and operations are taking precedence. In the near future we may have to add another member of staff to allow us to continue growing.
