he homecare industry attracts all sorts of people, each with their own reason for choosing to buy
a franchise in this growing sector; Caremark’s network of enterprising franchisees is no different. So, what motivates people to leave
a successful career path and set off in another professional direction entirely? For some, this may be down to personal motives, such as having direct experience of the sector they are now pursuing, while for others it is simply the desire to move into an industry that resonates with them. Robert Johnstone, experienced change manager and former retail operations director, sits somewhere in the middle of the two.

With more than 20 years of expertise in launching new stores and turning around underperforming retail operations in the UK and Russia, Robert has an impressive track record of success. Yet his desire to turn his attention and
talents to an industry that would give him the commercial challenge he was seeking, along with satisfying personal and financial rewards, was the reason he decided to change direction. Achieving commercial success was no longer enough. Although many of Caremark’s
franchisees come into the business with no exposure to the care sector, for Robert this was not the case. He has family and friends who are already working in the industry and his exposure to this growing industry showed

of his business, leaving him free to work on marketing and networking within his local community. Robert planned to be proactive in getting to know other health professionals and stakeholders in his area and make them aware of his new service while he waited for his Care Quality Commission (CQC) registration to be granted, which it subsequently has been. Robert’s professional abilities, his personal interest in the care sector and his desire to launch his own care business in his home territory of Cambridgeshire made him a great fit for Caremark’s network. Finding the right individuals to join the Caremark family is key. This is a business where the end product is a living, breathing being rather than a widget on a factory line. It follows, therefore, that potential franchisees must have a real desire to work with and serve vulnerable individuals. They are not simply buying a franchise,

him another side to business and an opportunity yet to be explored. With his interest piqued, he began to research UK homecare providers and the rest, as they say, is history. Since joining Caremark in June last
year, Robert has not wasted any time. The following month, he underwent Caremark’s franchisee training programme – a two-week residential course held at head office and passed with flying colours. Robert says: “The two weeks of training at head office were great and I received a huge amount of sound advice from many existing franchise owners, which will stand me in good stead.” Soon afterwards he acquired office premises and hired an experienced care manager to head up the care side
they are buying into the business of other people's lives. Robert says: “I was very excited about joining Caremark and setting up my own business. With my care manager recruited and office premises set up, I was able to focus on getting the Caremark name well known locally, growing my business, and ensuring I have an office that is compliant with CQC regulations.” Robert is certainly a man on a mission. As a high achiever, he is comfortable with pressing on with the job and getting results, only this time he is doing it for himself, which is far more gratifying. l
