How did you get involved in franchising? I met the master franchisee for Cartridge World, who offered me the opportunity to join the franchise support team recruiting new franchisees.
Your career highlight? Winning the bfa’s Franchisor of the Year in 2017 with Bluebird Care.
Who has been your career hero? It would have to be my dad for seeing how hard he worked on his own business, which he started from scratch. I also hugely admire my mum, who was a constant source of support and a driving force in their business until they sold it.
How do you relax? Leafi ng through Martin Mendelsohn's The Ethics of Franchising or a walk with the family.

Tell us ... a little-known fact about you? I’ve had lunch with the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh. When offered wine, the Duke asked for a beer, which took the waiting team completely by surprise!
...your favourite holiday destination? We loved our family holiday in Greece a couple of years ago, it was just idyllic. The memories keep me motivated to make a success of our business so that we’ll be able to do it again!

...dream dinner party guest(s)? My wife, Ian McGeechan, David Beckham, Prince Harry, Sara Cox, Clare Balding, Michael Hutchence, and Alistair and Jonny Brownlee.
Who’s providing the dinner party soundtrack? Now That’s What I Call Music 30-ish and then a Michael Hutchence-led karaoke session.
Who’d play you in the fi lm of your life? My wife and daughter would say George Clooney but I think Michael McIntyre is closer to the mark..
Do you support a team? Huddersfi eld Town. Supporting them, though, has been the same rollercoaster of emotions as running your own business.
Fictional or historical character you most identify with – and why? Rocky Balboa – obviously for the similar physique, and, while you take some knocks in life, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
How would you like to be remembered? As someone who worked hard to improve the various networks I’ve been fortunate enough to lead, and someone who was fair and reasonable in my support of franchisees. And, hopefully, for the teams I’ve been part of, as someone who was good to work for. l
