ActionCOACH Rupert and Angela Turton

Rupert and Angela Turton launched their ActionCOACH business in Oakham, Rutland, in June 2019. After their children had flown the nest, Rupert was made redundant from his job in the tech sector. Angela, a qualified chartered accountant, had been running a consultancy for small businesses for a while and so they decided to journey into business ownership together. Combining their expertise with ActionCOACH’s systems and support seemed like it would be a match made in heaven for this driven couple.

“Our children had left home and we both agreed that we wanted somewhere else to live,” says Angela. “I worked in business consultancy, so I wasn’t tied down to any certain area.” Rupert adds: “I was made redundant so I was looking for something new. Angela had been to a networking event and met with a local Action Coach. We both then looked into the franchise and fell in love with their ethos and culture. It made sense to make the investment together.” Although they both have different backgrounds in business,

they’re able to strike a balance and work on areas that play to their strengths. “I tend to focus on the marketing, advertising, finance and general admin tasks,” says Angela. “I also go to various networking events around the area to meet with different people – we can support business owners at different stages of their business, so it helps with raising awareness for what we do.” “On the other hand, I tend to lead with sales and recruitment,” says Rupert. “I also focus on setting up strategic alliances with

banks and work closely with ActionCOACH’s client generation centre to bring in new business. As we’ve been married for 32 years, we know each other very well. We’re fully aware of what areas of business we’re comfortable with and work around that. We complement each other nicely. “I think one of the benefits of going into business as a couple is that, as we had so much time to discuss the possibility of being business partners, we’d been able to work through any challenges we thought may crop up. We voiced any concerns before we started and made the mutual decision that it was the right time.” The pair admit that work sometimes takes over the dinner table, but they acknowledged that their first six months in business was always going to be that way. It hasn’t stopped them factoring in time for themselves. “Rupert likes to go cycling on Wednesday evenings and I go to a running group,” Angela said. “And once the business becomes more established, we’ll be able to create the right balance. The great thing about ActionCOACH is having the option of a flexible day – if we wanted to finish early, we would just start earlier. “The main piece of advice we’d give to anyone looking to invest

in a franchise with a partner is talk it through thoroughly prior to committing yourselves. Taking the time to consider all the pros and cons gives you the opportunity to speak freely. Make sure that you set some rules for work-life balance and keep communication at the heart of everything you do; when people get lost in the day-to-day grind of running a business, they forget to talk to one another and that’s when problems begin to form.”
