Franchise Focus New career, new you

Discover the world of opportunities franchising can bring with the quick-service restaurant Subway

INVESTMENT LEVEL: FROM £100,000 B

ecoming your own boss is a career ambition held by many, inspired by both the freedom and responsibility it brings, as well as the opportunity to

grow and build your own team. Taking the plunge to start out on your own can be an intimidating prospect; from creating a business plan and building your team to making sure all the legal requirements are in place, there are numerous aspects to consider. With all these elements to traverse, franchising off ers an attractive business model for many, as it provides a secure bridge between running your own business and having the reassurance that you are working within a reliable business strategy. For these reasons, franchising in the UK

and Ireland is growing in popularity, and one franchise business experiencing rapid growth as a result is Subway. One of the largest and best-known franchise brands, there are now over 2,400 stores in the UK and Ireland, and more than 44,000 stores in over 110 countries. With low start-up costs for a franchise of its size and stature, its successful franchise model is enabling thousands of ambitious entrepreneurs to fulfi l their dreams of becoming their own boss.

At 21, Rajveer Sandhar became one of the youngest Subway franchisees in the country. A second-generation franchisee, Raj gained valuable experience helping to manage one of his father’s two Subway stores, before taking the plunge and opening his own Subway franchise back in 2015.

Raj explains: “Working for my dad gave

me a great insight into the benefi ts of franchising and what can be achieved. After successfully managing his Subway store in Cannock for over two years, I felt it was time to stand on my own two feet. I’m very lucky to receive support from my dad whenever I need it, but the support I also received from the Subway brand itself was invaluable. It’s very much a hands-on approach with constant support from my fi eld consultant and development agent; everyone wants to see you do well, which is very reassuring.”

New Subway franchisees are provided

with robust support and training to get their new business ventures up and running. Every new franchisee attends a comprehensive two-week training course at the UK and Ireland’s Subway training centre in Cambridge. In addition, regional development agents provide support and assistance on the ground with site selection, leasing, operations and store development. There are also regular opportunities to meet with fellow franchisees and share best practice. Raj is now looking to the future and considering new ventures with the Subway brand. He says: “To open a franchise, especially for the Subway brand, you need to have both your head and your heart in it 100 per cent. I’ve set myself the target of opening fi ve Subway stores by the age of 30 – I know it will be a tough challenge, but I’m looking forward to getting there.” Raj has this advice for anyone thinking of buying a Subway franchise for the fi rst time: “Young people may think opening a franchise at their age is a risk; however, it’s a good risk. The support you receive from

the Subway brand is amazing; you really get a step-by-step guide and if you really put your all into it, you can’t go wrong. “It’s been such an experience being able to test my strengths and weaknesses, while still having the space to make my own way. It can be hard at times, but I’m very proud of the fact that, as a Subway franchisee, I can say I became my own boss at the age of 21. I can’t wait for my journey with the Subway brand to continue for many more years to come.” The Subway brand is continuing to expand and is always looking for hard- working, talented individuals, like Raj, to join the team and become a part of the success story.
