Subway opens 2,500th UK store
n Subway has opened the doors to its 2,500th store in the UK in Keynsham, near Bristol. The restaurant, which was launched in early August, features the new Subway Fresh Forward design. Following the global launch of the new format in Manchester in March, the store is the second pilot branch with the design to open in the UK. The location sports a bright new colour palette and a revamped fresh vegetable display. Earlier this year, Subway announced plans to increase the number of stores in the UK and Ireland to 3,000 by 2020, creating around 5,000 new jobs. It opened its 100th store in Northern Ireland in July. Owned by family franchisees Stephen and Sue Pasco, the duo operate a total of 16 Subway branches across Bristol, Gloucester, Somerset and Wiltshire and employ 145 people. Their son Ryan started at Subway as a sandwich artist and more recently moved onto the development team. Sue says: “We’re hugely proud to be able to open the brand’s 2,500th store and that it is one of the fi rst UK stores featuring the new look design. The modern design
will off er customers more of what they love about Subway, highlighting our bread baked in store daily, cookies and some of our veggies in modern displays, while off ering great value and fresh, varied menu options.”

off ers customers an enhanced and modern Subway experience, with many customer-focused touches, such as new digital menu boards, charging ports and special displays for the cookies, bread and vegetables.
Deirdre Anderson, development agent for Subway in the North West, says: “The reaction from customers to the new-look store has been incredibly positive and it’s following through in terms of increased sales and footfall into the store.” Developed with input from franchisees and customers worldwide, the Subway Fresh Forward design is expected to be seen in eight stores in the UK by Christmas, with all existing Subway stores to be refurbished in the new décor over the next few years.

n Sharan Dhaliwal, Caremark franchisee for Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan, spent 25 years working for the NHS as a nurse, midwife and then a health visitor. Her career changed suddenly when her husband sustained life- threatening injuries from a road accident and she took time off to care for him. When carers arrived to help her with her husband, she quickly saw how poor the level of care was and realised she could do a better job. Sharan says: “I had a solid business plan to start with, which I reviewed periodically. Plus, I determined simple critical business goals – you have to know where you are going before you get there. Building a successful business depends heavily on how well you work and relate with others; I mainly listen more than I speak.
“I’ve had invaluable support from my
regional manager and it was great to have the recognition from my franchisor when I won the South West regional award in January 2017.
“I am very pleased I have exceeded my targets set for the fi rst year. I’ve also taken risks, which I feel is key to building a successful business. We are

now a provider of choice with our local authority and have a good reputation. “I have some important short- and long-term goals, but, most importantly, I want to be part of Caremark’s success.”
