One year on... A year of discovery

Tanya Hill launched her ActionCOACH franchise in Basildon after being impressed by its services as a client. Here, she discusses her fi rst year…

What did you do before buying your franchise? My background is in fashion design; I trained and worked as a childrenswear designer for Tammy Girl 20 years ago. After backpacking around the world with my husband, we started our own upholstery business in 1999. Over a decade in, I was running a parent and toddler group on top of managing my business, just to earn enough money to sustain a basic lifestyle. That’s when I accepted an invitation to an ActionCOACH 6-Steps seminar. It was a turnaround point and we began group coaching in 2012. The business now runs day to day without me, which has given me the freedom to go off and become an Action Coach myself.

How have you found the past year? It took me a while to fi nd my natural fl ow. I was trying to be a business coach and now I’m Tanya who coaches, which is a subtle diff erence.

I now specialise in working with business owners in the trades, those that get my black-and-white approach and need a coach who is grounded. That’s resulted in my marketing acquisition cost of a client plummeting recently to just £16.

What are the benefi ts of running an ActionCOACH franchise? I’ve gone from working 14-hour days in our upholstery business to having a healthy work-life balance as an Action Coach. The franchise has given me the opportunity to be in control; I can work the business around my family commitments. The ActionCOACH community is amazing; there is always someone at the end of the phone and we get together regularly. They off er a lot of training and there is a huge library of resources to support my work with clients. The support from other coaches is worldwide, not just in the UK. If a client needs something that I don’t know, I can ask the global community of coaches and get recommendations.

What has been your most memorable moment of the past year? My job as a coach is to make sure my amazing clients stay on the right path, so they can have the life they deserve. Once you are earning enough to support your family, your focus really moves to making

a diff erence to your clients’ lives. I am not in this for the glory or awards – I am in it so I can give other people the chance that we got.

On a personal note, my husband and I handed over 12 years’ savings to start our coaching in 2012. The £4,500 we had saved was going towards a dream family holiday to Thailand. We fi nally spent two weeks in Thailand last Christmas and have a 25-day holiday planned back there soon – you could say that initial coaching fee was a real investment!

What are your plans for next year? I want to get into ActionCOACH’s top 100 global list of coaches and increase my monthly bankings to £24,000. I’ll be entering more of my clients into regional and national business and sector awards to recognise their successes on a more formal level.

My husband and I always wanted to buy a holiday home in Devon and we’ll be able to begin looking, as well as look

at other property investments to secure our fi nancial future. I’ll also be continuing with my sideline of business illustrations by illustrating a book for ActionCOACH’s global founder and chairman, Brad Sugars!

What would you do diff erently? It’s not an easy journey – you have to get into the mindset through personal development. I over-complicated what I needed to do and avoided the marketing work when I fi rst launched my ActionCOACH business. You not only need to follow the system but take on the psychological development, which is a big part of the initial franchise training. If I had my time again, I would embrace those learnings to fi nd my work fl ow much more quickly. You can make that change by taking full advantage of the training, mentoring and support off ered by the UK support team and hundreds of fellow franchise owners worldwide.
