For its sixth year, the annual Melbourne International Millinery Competition went full steam ahead! The 2022 steam was used to form the brims of headwear to a very special brief. After so many long months of postponed weddings, the bridal industry had come back. Catherine Ellen of The Essential Hat collaborated with local designer Vivienna Lorikeet. The two together considered a brief to appease the sometimes forgotten yet ever-important mothers of the bride. Vivienna supplied garments that responded to multiple wedding settings and Catherine developed and communicated the brief to all entrants. was to do more than just create a headpiece responding to a brief. This year was dedicated to bringing awareness to millinery, its practitioners and the work that they produce. To align the competition to the wedding industry was important. The task for this year’s entrants was one not just of creativity and skill; it was also one of integral marketing and public relations in order to assist artists in bouncing back from the years that have passed. Headwear designers from all around the

world participated in this year’s event, with close to 70 entrants. Judging criteria for the competition included style, line, balance, weight, technique, finish and originality. The panel included the founder of The Essential Hat Susan Drerup, internationally recognised milliner and tutor Louise Macdonald,
