TRENDS S/S 2023 Performant & natural

In the Smart Creation Area, a space entirely dedicated to innovative product developments and cutting-edge solutions in sustainability and fashion tech, several interesting materials for the hat industry were presented.

Cocccon Bananatex

Made from sustainably grown banana plant fibres, Bananatex is a durable technical fabric

that is biodegradable and fully circular. Made of 100% abaca with natural wax coating, it is a plastic-free solution for rain hats and bags.

Nova Kaeru Piñatex Piñatex is an innovative natural beLEAF Nova Kaeru, a company

specialised in the production of exotic sustainable

bioleathers, presented at Première Vision a new and

totally vegan product: beLEAF. They used their 20 years of tanning experience to turn leaves from the tropical plant

‘elephant ear’ into a vegetable replacement for leather. The end result is a thin and supple material, with a glossy front and a soft backside.

The company states that the process to make these leaves is entirely organic; no heavy metals are used and the solid

waste and processed water are completely reused.

Pyratex

textile with a leather-look, made from waste pineapple leaf fibre. The leaves are the byproduct of existing agriculture, and their

use creates an additional income stream for farming communities. The material is developed for use as a sustainable alternative to both mass-produced leather and polluting synthetic materials.

Bananatex/QWSTION

Peace organic silk Cocccon produces organic silk for which no animals are killed or harmed. After the silk butterflies have hatched themselves out of their cocoons, the empty cocoons are collected and forwarded to Cocccon’s degumming department. Here, any residues of the caterpillars’ gum are removed by boiling them in water with organic soap added, before the silk is processed further.

Ananas Anam

Abaca fibre Pyratex produces knit fabrics made from banana leaf (45%) and organic cotton (55%). The abaca tree is a wildly grown plant which is often collected by small groups of local farmers. It is sturdy and self-sufficient, requiring no pesticides or extra water to grow. The fibre itself is compostable and biodegradable.

Ictyos

Fish leather By recovering skins that were initially destined for destruction from their French agri-food partners, Ictyos does not increase fishing and uses smartly the available resources in an upcycling logic. The company favours vegetable tannins composed of leaves, roots or fruits to minimise the impact on deforestation.
