TECHNIQUES


Before taking the straw from the block, apply the stiffener. It is vital that the shapes are completely dry before applying straw stiffener. Only use the stiffener specified for straw or sinamay and apply with an artist’s white bristle brush.


Apply the stiffener to all of the straw surface (including the head- fitting area). Make note of where you start and finish, so that you do not overlap the stiffener.

Finishing the pinning of the crown Once you have pinned and pulled all the excess straw to the underside of the block, make sure you have 2.5 cm seam allowance for the head-fitting.


When dry, lightly iron the straw using a circular movement (this stops you burning the straw). This is a technique known as ‘panning’.


Ease off the shape from the fattest side of the crown and at the back making sure to keep the point intact.


Tip!


Solvent stiffeners must only be used in a well-ventilated area – if in doubt, use it outdoors.
