Launched by the US Milliners Guild in October 2021, the ‘Bes-Ben: Humor and High Design’ Competition pays homage to American milliner Benjamin B. Green-Field, who created the Bes- Ben hat label. The contest challenged entrants to create a piece inspired by the imagination, artistry and wit of the designer known as Chicago’s Mad Hatter, with judges that included leading milliner Stephen Jones OBE, author of Bes-Ben: Chicago’s Mad Hatter Elizabeth Jachimowicz, and theatrical milliner Cigmond Meachen. With more than 80 submissions having been received from hat makers around the world, the winners were announced as below.

In partnership with the Texas Fashion Collection, the Milliners Guild presented a related exhibition (March 7 - May 15) at the NorthPark Center, Dallas. Featured designs included the top ten finalists of the ‘Bes-Ben: Humor and High Design Hat’ Competition alongside contemporary and historic milliners such as Stephen Jones, Cigmond Meachen, Byron Lars, Benjamin Green-Field, Cristóbal Balenciaga and Jack McConnell; and on public view for the first time were unique creations from the TFC holdings by Dallas-based milliners Ian Dellar, Sue Dooley and Edna Mye. The project was duly able to demonstrate the collective imagination and ingenuity displayed by milliners of the past ninety years.
