magazines. Create your own press releases or invest in the help of an agency and send it off with images. Magazines and online media outlets LOVE great images, so if you can fill your press release with that, you’re sure to be onto a winner. I absolutely love speaking to milliners


– new and experienced – so if you have any questions, I’d be delighted to help. One of my favourite things about the industry is how collaborative we all are and rarely do you feel like you’re up against the competition. Hen party The actual event


Location is super-important and will depend on the group that you want to attract. Consider an art club, luxury hotel, community hall or even a local room for hire. To really pick the right location, you need to think about what sort of feel and atmosphere you want to give off on the day – crafty, luxurious, classy? This will determine what venue you use. After a few events, you may be able to build up a relationship with the supplier and use the same place on a regular basis. One of the good things about millinery events is that they can be hosted all around the country. With the event planned, I always


walk through it in my head as if I were a guest. What time do I arrive? What do I see first? Is there any food and drink available? How long will the whole event take? Is there time to take photos and chat with others in the group? Of course as well as this, you, as the event organiser, need to save time for cleaning up and consider the time for admin and general planning too. After all, someone has to do it.

Hosting millinery events are a great way to boost your business and its finances – but only if it’s profitable. It’s easy to get carried away during the planning stage – trust me! But you need to make sure the event is priced correctly, at a cost that people will pay and that it’s profitable at the end of the day. Consider the costs of travel for


yourself, fabrics, material, equipment, refreshments, and any wages if you need to pay someone to help.


Boosting your business


Millinery events are a fantastic way to give your business a little helping hand, but the last piece of advice I have is to make everyone aware that you’re hosting them! Getting publicity and press coverage really helped my business in the first few years, and today I’m appearing in national weekly magazines, and my hats are being worn at more fashion week shows and even recently on The Graham Norton Show on TV! This will take time but begin by approaching relevant blogs and
