Positioning of the button of a straw
When 09
Finding the button centre on the block The top centre of a parasisal straw is called the button (+). In the case of a round tip, the button should be in the centre of the crown and placed as a + cross.
blocking, this button should be in an aesthetically pleasing place on the block. You would not put the button (+) in a place
that would distract the eye when your customer is wearing the hat. I have used a paper template to illustrate what I mean.
Diamond crown
If you have a diamond- shaped crown, the tip should look this.
Blocking the crown from the cone
Here are two alternative ways of blocking a hood. I blocked both shapes from one cone and had enough left over for one of the hats to be trimmed with leftover straw.
Alternative 1 10
Blocking the crown from the top of the cone Starting with the button: The ‘+’ must be in the centre of your block, making sure that the ‘+’ is facing North, South, East and West points. Pull over the rest of the straw. Smooth over the block and pin into the block, remove the sinamay pins and replace them into the straw.
Mark the straw button with a stitched +, and pin the parasisal into the block with the centre of the + on the centre of the straw.
11
Pin the straw around the block making sure that the + remains in the centre of the block.
